It has a very large head and a small body. Its big eyes and nostrils look like a rabbit. This is why people give it that name. The fish is silver-green with brown spots. It has a long, whip-like tail. A tall fin sits high on its back. This fin has a spine that can sting.

These fish live in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. They like to live on muddy seabeds. Most live in deep water. They are benthophagous, which means they eat things on the bottom. They eat crabs, worms, and octopuses. Small fish eat tiny sea bugs. Larger fish eat more crabs. The rabbit fish grows slowly. Males can live up to 30 years. Females can live up to 26 years. They are oviparous, which means they lay eggs. The babies hatch after nine to 12 months. This fish is now called vulnerable. People catch them by mistake in fishing nets. Some people also want their oil for medicine.
