R. M. Hare was a famous British thinker. He studied right and wrong. This field is called moral philosophy. He taught at Oxford University for many years. Later, he taught in Florida.

During World War II, Hare was a prisoner of war. This was a very hard time for him. He felt it was like being a slave. This experience changed his views. He believed philosophy should help people live well. He wanted to find a guide for life in hard times.

Hare had big ideas about how we use words. He called one idea universal prescriptivism. He said words like "good" or "right" have special rules. He believed that if you say you must do something, you should do it. He also taught preference utilitarianism. This means we should act to help people get what they want.

He said we must look at all the facts. We cannot ignore what happens after we act. This helps us make better choices. Many people studied his work. His son and many students also became thinkers. His ideas still help people today.
