Richard Bedford Bennett was a prominent Canadian lawyer, businessman, and politician. He served as the 11th prime minister of Canada from 1930 to 1935.

Bennett was born on July 3, 1870, in Hopewell Hill, New Brunswick. He grew up in a household that valued literacy and the Protestant ethic. His mother, Henrietta Stiles, was a strong influence on his character. She taught him the importance of thrift, or being careful with money. This habit of saving stayed with him throughout his entire life.

Bennett's path to success began with his education and legal training. He attended Dalhousie University, where he graduated with a law degree in 1893. To pay for his studies, he worked as an assistant in the university library.

After graduating, he moved to Calgary in 1897. There, he partnered with James Lougheed to establish a successful law firm. This move marked the beginning of his rise as a wealthy businessman.

Through smart investments, Bennett became one of the wealthiest Canadians of his era. He worked in many different industries to build his fortune. He invested in oil companies, such as the Calgary Petroleum Products Company. He also held leadership roles in companies like Canada Cement and Calgary Power.

He eventually gained full control of the E. B. Eddy Company. His wealth allowed him to become a philanthropist. He donated money to hospitals, schools, and individuals in need.

Bennett's political career was long and involved many different roles. He first served in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in 1898. In 1905, he became the first leader of the Alberta Conservative Party.

He later served in the House of Commons and held several ministerial positions. He was the minister of justice in 1921 and the minister of finance in 1926. In 1927, he was elected leader of the Conservative Party, which made him the leader of the Opposition.

In 1930, Bennett won a majority government and became prime minister. His leadership coincided with the Great Depression, a period of severe economic hardship. Initially, his government used laissez-faire policies. This is a term for a policy where the government does not interfere much in the economy. However, these policies were largely ineffective at helping the struggling nation.

This failure led to a change in his political approach.

To address the crisis, Bennett's government became more interventionist. This means the government began taking a more active role in managing the economy. He attempted to implement changes similar to the "New Deal" used by Franklin Roosevelt in the United States. This shift caused a split within his own Conservative Party. Many people also viewed these changes as a sign of incompetence.

Consequently, Bennett suffered a landslide defeat in the 1935 election.

Despite his political struggles, Bennett left important legacies in Canada. He helped establish the Bank of Canada to manage the nation's money. He also helped create the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission, or CRBC.
