A man named Christopher Sholes made it. He wanted to help people type fast. He made it for old typewriters.

Sholes spent five years testing different ways to arrange the letters. He eventually moved six vowels to the top row. This helped create the layout we recognize today.

In 1873, a man named James Densmore sold the rights to E. Remington and Sons. They made the Sholes & Glidden Typewriter.

The layout became very popular after the Remington No. 2 came out in 1878. This model was special because it used a key to switch between upper and lower case letters. Some early versions did not even have the numbers 0 or 1. People used the letter O for zero and the letter I for one. These changes helped keep the machines simple and cheaper to build.

The history of QWERTY is tied to the success of specific commercial products. In 1873, James Densmore sold the manufacturing rights for the Sholes & Glidden Typewriter to E. Remington and Sons. The layout gained massive popularity following the release of the Remington No. 2 in 1878. This specific model was significant because it was the first typewriter to include a shift key. This allowed users to type both upper and lower case letters using a single key. This success established QWERTY as the dominant standard for the typing industry.

Historical versions of the layout featured several notable differences from modern keyboards. The 1878 patent layout lacked the numerals 0 and 1 to reduce manufacturing and maintenance costs.
