Historical versions of the layout featured several notable differences from modern keyboards. The 1878 patent layout lacked the numerals 0 and 1 to reduce manufacturing and maintenance costs. These digits were considered redundant because they could be recreated using other keys. For example, typists often used the uppercase "O" for zero and the uppercase "I" or lowercase "L" for the number one. 
Today, QWERTY exists in many different language-specific variants. In Europe, modified layouts like QWERTZ are used in Germany, while AZERTY is used in France.
QWERTY connects the mechanical era to the digital age through various technological evolutions. The first computer terminals, such as the Teletype, were essentially typewriters controlled by computer codes. These machines adopted the QWERTY layout but added new keys like "escape" and ASCII punctuation.
