She became a well-known icon due to her flamboyant personality, sharp wit, and unique fashion sense. Crisp was also a professional model for life classes in art colleges for thirty years. This work provided the inspiration for her most famous memoir, *The Naked Civil Servant*.

Through her books, films, and stage performances, she shared her personal views on social manners and the importance of style. She believed that cultivating style could act as a way to achieve social inclusion.

Crisp's professional life followed several distinct stages. She began her career working as an engineer's tracer. In 1942, she left that job to become a professional model for life classes in London and the Home Counties.

Later, she transitioned into a successful performer with a solo stage show. This one-man show became a long-running hit in both Britain and America. She also supported herself by writing film reviews and columns for various magazines. Crisp even lived by attending social events, such as cocktail parties and premieres, to maintain her connections.

Her journey into fame was driven by her autobiography and a documentary film. *The Naked Civil Servant* was published in 1968, though it initially sold only 3,500 copies.

The success of a 1971 documentary film about her life caused the book to be reprinted. This media attention turned her into a theatre-filling humorist. In 1978, her solo show sold out the Duke of York's Theatre in London. Following this success, she moved to New York City permanently in 1981 and lived in Manhattan's East Village.

Born Denis Charles Pratt on December 25, 1908, in Surrey, England, she changed her name to Quentin Crisp in her twenties.

Her early life was marked by challenges, including being teased at school for her effeminate mannerisms. During the 1940s, she lived in a small flat in Chelsea, London. She remained in that same London residence until her emigration to the United States in 1981. Throughout her life, she remained fiercely independent and often expressed controversial opinions. These views sometimes led to disagreements with activists in the gay community.

Crisp's influence reached many different areas of culture. The musician Sting was inspired to write the song "Englishman in New York" after visiting her in 1986. He described her as a hero who lived through a dangerous time in history.

Her style also left a mark on cinema, as actor Bill Murray based a character's dress in the *Ghostbusters* reboot on her look. Other artists have honored her through documentaries, songs, and art installations. In 2013, the Museum of Arts and Design in Manhattan even held a retrospective exhibition of her work and life.

In her later years, Crisp reflected deeply on her own identity. At age 90, she wrote in her book *The Last Word* that she had concluded she was transgender.

She died of a heart attack on November 21, 1999, at the age of 90. She requested a cremation with a minimum of ceremony. Her ashes were later flown to New York to be with her personal assistant. Even after her death, her life continued to be studied through posthumous publications like her autobiography, *The Last Word*.

Quentin Crisp's legacy is one of defying social conventions. She used her platform to discuss the complexities of gender and social manners. While her remarks were sometimes polarizing, her impact on art and pop culture remains significant. From the stage to the pages of memoirs, she encouraged people to enlarge their horizons. Her life serves as a study of how one person can use style and storytelling to navigate a changing world.
