He was also known by his birth name, Nguyễn Huệ. He served as the second emperor of the Tây Sơn dynasty from 1788 to 1792. Beyond his role as a ruler, he was one of the most successful military commanders in the nation's history. He led the Tây Sơn rebellion alongside his two brothers, Nguyễn Nhạc and Nguyễn Lữ. Together, the Tây Sơn brothers worked to overthrow the existing power structures in Vietnam. They successfully toppled the imperial Later Lê dynasty. They also defeated the rival feudal houses: the Nguyễn in the south and the Trịnh in the north.

Nguyễn Huệ's family origins were rooted in the peasantry. His ancestors lived in Nghệ An before moving to southern Vietnam. His father was Nguyễn Phi Phúc, who ensured his eight children received an education.

Among these children, three brothers became leaders of the rebellion. Nguyễn Huệ was born in 1753 in Tây Sơn village, located in Quy Nhơn Province. Historical accounts describe him as a cunning man with a talent for combat. He possessed bright, penetrating eyes and a stentorian, or very loud, voice. His martial arts training was guided by a master named Trương Văn Hiến. This mentor recognized the brothers' talents and encouraged them to perform great deeds.

The rebellion began in 1771 due to political instability. The Nguyễn lords had held power in southern Vietnam for 200 years. However, their government had become weak because of poor leadership and internal conflicts. A powerful official named Trương Phúc Loan had seized control of the Nguyễn government. To resist his excessive power, Nguyễn Nhạc gathered an army to revolt. He was supported by his brothers, Nguyễn Huệ and Nguyễn Lữ. During these early stages, Huệ was essential to the movement. He managed the rebellion's finances and focused on training the soldiers.

The Tây Sơn movement gained popularity through specific social policies. They promised to be fair and to avoid corruption. Their slogan focused on looting the rich to help the poor. This approach attracted many talented generals to their cause. These included leaders like Bùi Thị Xuân and Trần Quang Diệu. As the army grew, they occupied central territories from Quy Nhơn to Bình Thuận. This expansion significantly weakened the authority of the Nguyễn government. The rebels faced many challenges, including massive armies sent from the north by the Trịnh lords.

Nguyễn Huệ proved his military brilliance through strategic victories. In one instance, he led troops against the general Tống Phước Hiệp. The Tây Sơn forces defeated the unprepared Nguyễn troops and inflicted heavy losses.

This was considered Huệ's first great victory. The brothers also used clever diplomacy to manage their enemies. Nguyễn Nhạc once proposed a deal to the Trịnh lords to buy time. This ceasefire allowed the Tây Sơn to shore up their military strength. They fortified the Đồ Bàn fortress and built new bases to prepare for future campaigns.

The conflict eventually moved into intense southern campaigns. In 1777, Nguyễn Huệ and Nguyễn Lữ captured Saigon. This campaign destroyed much of the Nguyễn lords' army. However, the heir of the Nguyễn, Nguyễn Ánh, managed to escape.

Ánh fled to different locations, eventually seeking help from a French priest named Pigneau de Behaine. The struggle for control continued for years. In 1784, a Siamese army attempted to help Nguyễn Ánh by attacking Saigon. While the Siamese troops captured several locations, they met stubborn resistance from the Tây Sơn army.

Nguyễn Huệ's reign ended unexpectedly when he died in 1792. He was only 40 years old at the time of his death. Before passing, he had planned a massive march south to destroy the army of Nguyễn Ánh. Without his leadership, the Tây Sơn dynasty began to fall. His successors could not implement his complex ruling plans. This left the empire weak and vulnerable to its enemies. In 1802, Nguyễn Ánh finally overthrew the Tây Sơn and established the imperial Nguyễn dynasty. The era of the Tây Sơn brothers remains a significant chapter in the transition of Vietnamese power.
