The history of this land is very long and complex. During the Bronze Age, nomadic tribes lived here. They were part of a group called the Kayue culture. Later, the Tuyuhun Kingdom was established around the Qinghai Lake. Many different powers have controlled this area over time. The Manchu-led Qing Dynasty took control around the year 1724. Before that, the Khoshut Mongols ruled much of the land.

In more recent history, the province has changed many times. The province of Qinghai was officially established in 1928. Before that, Muslim warlords known as the Ma clique ruled the area. One famous leader was Ma Bufang, who ruled until 1949. He built many things like roads, schools, and hospitals. After the Chinese revolution, the new government took control in 1950. Today, the province is part of the People's Republic of China. It is divided into several cities and autonomous areas to help different groups live there.

Qinghai is a massive province located in northwestern China. It sits mostly on the high Tibetan Plateau. By land area, it is the largest province in the People's Republic of China, if you exclude the autonomous regions. The province is named after Qinghai Lake, which is the largest lake in the country.

This region is a vital part of Asia's water systems. It contains the headwaters for three of the world's most important rivers. These are the Yellow River, the Yangtze River, and the Mekong River. The Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve was created specifically to protect these sources. This reserve includes 18 subareas that manage the water flow of these great rivers.

The geography of Qinghai is defined by its extreme height and varied terrain. The average elevation of the province is about 3,000 meters above sea level. High mountain ranges like the Tanggula and Kunlun mountains dominate the landscape. The highest point in the entire province is Bukadaban Feng, which reaches 6,860 meters.

The Riyue Mountain range also divides the province into different zones. These zones separate the pastoral lands from the agricultural areas in the east and west.

The climate in this high-altitude region is often harsh and unpredictable. Because it is so high, the winters are quite cold. The highest elevations experience especially severe winter weather. Summers are generally mild, but the temperature can change a lot within a single day. This is known as a large diurnal temperature variation.

Most of the precipitation, or rainfall, happens during the summer months. In the winter and spring, the air is very dry. Between February and April, the province is also prone to heavy winds and sandstorms. Much of the land is classified as semi-arid or arid because of these low moisture levels.

Qinghai is a place where many different ethnic groups live together. There are over 37 recognized ethnic groups in the province. The Han people are the largest group, especially in the capital city of Xining and the city of Haidong. Other significant groups include Tibetans and the Hui people. According to the 2021 census, Tibetans make up one-fifth of the population. The Hui people make up roughly one-sixth of the total population.

National minorities together account for 49.5% of the 5.6 million people living in Qinghai. This diversity is reflected in the many ethnic autonomous areas found at the county and district levels.

The history of the region stretches back to the Bronze Age. During that time, nomadic tribes known as the Kayue culture lived there. They practiced agriculture and husbandry, which means they raised animals. Later, the Tuyuhun Kingdom was established around the shores of Qinghai Lake. The Tibetan Empire eventually incorporated the Tuyuhun after military conflicts. The region was also a battleground between the Tang dynasty and various Tibetan tribes. The area saw many changes as different powers, like the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty, moved through the region.

In more recent history, the Qing dynasty took control of the area around 1724. They defeated the Khoshut Mongols to establish authority. After the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1912, the region was ruled by Muslim warlords. This group was known as the Ma clique. One notable leader was Ma Bufang, who served as the military governor. He oversaw a period of state-run industrialization and built many roads and schools.

In 1928, the Nationalist Government officially established Qinghai as a province with Xining as its capital. By 1950, the province became part of the People's Republic of China.

Today, the political structure of Qinghai follows a one-party-government system. The Governor is the highest-ranking official in the People's Government. However, the Qinghai Chinese Communist Party Committee Secretary holds more power in the dual-governing system. The province is divided into eight prefecture-level divisions. These include two cities, Xining and Haidong, and six autonomous prefectures. This administrative setup helps manage the diverse needs of the many ethnic groups living across the vast, high-altitude landscape.
