Qatif is a governorate located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

It occupies a strategic coastal position along the Arabian Gulf. The territory stretches from Ras Tanura and Jubail in the north to Dammam in the south. To the west, it reaches toward King Fahd International Airport. The region contains several major urban centers. These include Qatif City, Safwa City, and Saihat City. It also includes the island of Tarout. Each of these towns operates under its own sub-municipality. Qatif is one of the oldest continuous settlements in the Arabian Peninsula. Its history reaches back to approximately 3500 BC.

The geography of Qatif creates a unique environment within the region. To the east lies the Arabian Gulf, which has warm and calm waters. These waters are rich in marine life, including fish and shrimp. The sea is also a source of pearls. To the west, the landscape changes into the Al-Dahna Desert. This desert is characterized by golden sands and small rocky heights. Between the sea and the desert lies a green oasis. This oasis is supported by abundant natural springs. The rich agricultural soil allows a dense jungle of palm trees to grow.

Archaeological findings reveal a deep and complex history for the area. In ancient times, the region was part of Greater Bahrain, also known as Dilmun. The Sumerians referred to this land as a place of paradise and immortality.

Many significant artifacts have been discovered here by chance. For example, a 94 cm limestone statue known as the Worshipping Servant was found on Tarout Island in 1966.

Additionally, an ancient funerary inscription tablet in Hasaitic was discovered on Tarout Island. This tablet dates to the 5th or 6th century CE.

Many different powers have competed for control of Qatif over the centuries. In 899, the Qarmatians conquered the oases of Qatif and Al-Hasa. They ruled as an independent state until 1071. Later, the Uyunids ruled the region from 1071 to 1253. During this period, Qatif became a vital trade port. It was so important that the entire Persian Gulf was sometimes called the "Sea of Qatif." In the 16th century, the Portuguese invaded the area. They sacked Qatif in 1520 and killed the Jabrid ruler, Muqrin ibn Zamil. The Ottoman Empire eventually took control of the region in 1549.

The area later saw rule by the Banu Khalid and the various Saudi states. Ibn Saud finally established Saudi rule in the Eastern Province in 1913.

The economy of Qatif has undergone massive transformations. For centuries, the people worked primarily as merchants, farmers, and fishermen. The name Qatif itself is derived from words meaning "harvest" or "grain." This reflects the area's long history of agriculture. However, the economy faced a sharp decline in the 1920s. This was caused by the invention of cultured pearls, which hurt the natural pearl trade. World War I also caused economic hardship. In the late 1940s, the development of oil fields changed everything. Qatif shifted its focus toward the oil industry. Today, the region is also a center for public services, education, and healthcare.

Modern Qatif is home to a significant population of Shia Muslims. These indigenous populations have resided in the region for many centuries. This distinguishes Qatif from cities like Dammam or Khobar. Those cities were developed more recently in the 20th century by migrants from Najd. The social and political history of the Shia community has been marked by significant events. In 1979, major strikes occurred in the area. These protests were met with a government curfew and the use of armored vehicles. More recently, in 2011, the region saw unrest related to the Arab Spring. Protesters in cities like al-Awamiya demanded political reforms and the release of prisoners. These events led to various arrests and clashes between citizens and security forces.

Despite its modern changes, Qatif maintains many historical landmarks. Visitors can see Tarout Castle and the old Qala'a.

The region also holds a place in aviation history. Darin Airport opened in 1911. It was the first airport in Saudi Arabia. It was established by the Allied Powers during World War I. This airport was part of a military strategy against the Ottoman Empire. Today, Qatif remains a vital link between the ancient history of the oasis and the modern industrial economy of Saudi Arabia.
