Before this era, most large structures were made of mud-brick. The shift to using stone changed architecture forever. This project required a massive amount of labor and resources. It proved that the royal government had new levels of control over people and materials.

Construction of the pyramid was not a single event. Instead, it went through several developmental phases and revisions. Most Egyptologists follow the stages identified by Jean-Philippe Lauer. These stages are labeled M1, M2, M3, P1, P1', and P2. The early stages, M1 through M3, focused on a mastaba. A mastaba is a flat-topped, rectangular tomb structure.

In the M1 stage, the builders created a square limestone core. They used horizontal beds of stone bound with red or yellow clay. They then added a thick casing of fine white Tura limestone. This initial structure was much smaller than the final pyramid.

As the project evolved, the builders moved into the P phases. These phases transformed the mastaba into a step pyramid.

During the P1 phase, the builders used larger, high-quality limestone blocks. They stopped using horizontal beds and started using inclined accretion layers. These layers were thick and leaned against each other for stability. This method helped prevent the massive structure from collapsing. The pyramid eventually grew to include six steps. The final version, known as P2, reached a height of about 60 meters. The completed pyramid had a base length of 225 meters.

Below the pyramid lies a complex underground funerary apartment. This area consists of a labyrinth of tunnels and galleries. These passages total nearly 6 kilometers in length. They connect to a central shaft that is 7 meters square and 28 meters deep. The walls are decorated with blue faience tiles to look like reed mats. This style is often called a "palace façade." The central burial chamber was built using four courses of granite. It was sealed with a massive 3.5-ton block. Archaeologists found over 40,000 stone vessels in the nearby storerooms. These items were intended to serve the king in the afterlife.

The mortuary complex includes many other ceremonial structures.

These include a great trench, an enclosure wall, and a Sed festival complex. The enclosure wall features niches hand-carved out of limestone. In earlier times, such niches were made with wood and reed mats. By carving them into stone, the builders created a permanent monument. The complex also contains north and south pavilions and various temples.

These buildings worked together to support the king's religious needs.

The Pyramid of Djoser set many important architectural precedents. It established the pyramidal form for royal tombs. This style influenced the later pyramids of the 4th, 5th, and 6th Dynasties. The great pyramids at Giza are direct descendants of this design. It also changed where kings were buried. From this point on, Old Kingdom kings were buried in the north rather than at Abydos. The site remains a landmark of human achievement. After a 14-year restoration, it reopened to visitors in March 2020.
