Pushyamitra Shunga was a leader in ancient India.

He started the Shunga Empire. He did this after the last Mauryan ruler died. Pushyamitra ruled for 36 years. He even fought a war against the Greeks.

Some old Buddhist books tell stories about him. They say he was mean to Buddhists. These books say he destroyed their homes and temples. However, many experts do not believe these stories. They think the stories might be too big or exaggerated. Some think he may have treated Buddhists poorly only for politics.

Other facts show a different side. Some stone buildings called stupas were improved during his rule.

Experts say his time helped make Buddhist art better. This makes it hard to know if he was truly mean. After his rule ended, his son Agnimitra became the new leader. It is interesting to see how different stories can tell different parts of history.
