The black dot in your eye is a hole. It is called a pupil.

This hole lets light into your eye. The colored part of your eye controls the hole. It changes the size of the pupil.

When it is bright, the hole gets small. This stops too much light from coming in.

Human eye in dim light

When it is dark, the hole gets big. This lets more light in so you can see.

Most human pupils are round. But other animals have different shapes. Some cats have slits. Some goats have wide shapes.

It is fun to see how eyes work!
