Punjab is a major province located in the central-eastern region of Pakistan.

The province's name reveals its most important physical feature. The word "Punjab" comes from Persian roots. It translates to "The Land of Five Waters." This name refers to the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers.
The geography of Punjab is defined by its rivers and borders. To the north-west, it borders the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. To the south-west, it meets Balochistan, and Sindh lies to the south. It also touches the Islamabad Capital Territory and Azad Kashmir to the north. Internationally, it shares a border with India. It meets the Indian states of Rajasthan and Punjab, as well as Indian-administered Kashmir.
Human history in this region stretches back hundreds of thousands of years. The earliest evidence of habitation is found in the Soan Valley. Here, the Soanian culture developed between 774,000 BC and 11,700 BC. Later, the Bronze Age Harrapan civilization flourished from approximately 3000 BC. Between 1500 and 500 BC, Indo-Aryan migrations occurred. These migrations led to the Iron Age Vedic civilization. During this era, the Rigveda was composed, forming the foundation of Hinduism.
Ancient empires also fought for control over this fertile land. In 518 BCE, the Achaemenid emperor Darius the Great annexed the land up to the Jhelum River. One notable historical event was the Battle of the Hydaspes. The king Porus fought against Alexander the Great during this time. Alexander was so impressed by Porus's bravery that he reinstated his territory. This encounter led to a period of cultural syncretism. This means different cultures blended together, creating new styles like Greco-Buddhist art.
Throughout the medieval period, many different dynasties ruled the province. The Ghaznavids ruled for 157 years after attacking the region in the tenth century. Later, the Delhi Sultanate controlled Punjab for three hundred years. This Sultanate was led by five different dynasties: the Mamluks, Khalajis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodis. For example, Ghiyath al-Din Tughlaq was a former governor of Multan. He fought 28 battles against Mongols to protect the region. By the 16th century, the local population was mostly Muslim.
Today, Punjab is one of the most urbanized regions in South Asia. Approximately 40 percent of its population lives in urban areas. Major cities include the capital, Lahore, as well as Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Multan.

Culture and religion are deeply woven into the landscape of Punjab. Most residents are Punjabi Muslims. Their culture is heavily influenced by Islam and Sufism. You can find many Sufi shrines spread across the province.
