Roman armies often used two large groups called legions. Each legion had thousands of infantry soldiers. Some soldiers were heavy infantry with large shields and swords. Others were light skirmishers who threw javelins. On the sea, both sides used powerful warships. These ships were called quinqueremes. Each ship carried a large crew of about 300 people.

The second war is very famous because of a general named Hannibal.

Hannibal campaigned in Italy for fourteen years. However, Rome invaded North Africa in 204 BC. This forced Hannibal to return home. He was defeated at the battle of Zama in 202 BC. A treaty in 201 BC took away much of Carthage's land.

The third war was the final conflict.

The Punic Wars were a series of three major conflicts between the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian Empire. These wars lasted from 264 BC to 146 BC. They shaped the entire western Mediterranean region through forty-three years of land and sea warfare.

The struggle was not just about territory. It was a fight to decide which power would dominate the ancient world. This long period of conflict eventually led to the total destruction of Carthage and the rise of Rome as a supreme power.

Warfare during this era was highly organized and relied on specific military structures. Rome typically utilized two legions during a conflict. Each legion consisted of 4,200 infantry and 300 cavalry. Within these legions, soldiers were divided by their equipment. Heavy infantry carried large shields and short thrusting swords. They were supported by velites, who were lighter skirmishers using javelins. Carthage relied heavily on foreign mercenaries rather than its own citizens. These soldiers included Libyan infantry, Numidian light cavalry, and even war elephants.

The First Punic War began in 264 BC on the island of Sicily. At this time, Carthage held a dominant maritime empire. Rome was a growing power in Italy with a strong army but no navy. The conflict lasted twenty-three years and involved fighting in Sicily, North Africa, Corsica, and Sardinia.

In 241 BC, Carthage was defeated. The resulting peace treaty forced Carthage to pay large reparations. Sicily was also taken by Rome and became its first province.

The Second Punic War started in 218 BC and is famous for the actions of the Carthaginian general Hannibal.

Hannibal famously crossed the Alps to invade mainland Italy. His expedition saw great early success and lasted fourteen years in Italy. Fighting also occurred in Iberia, Sicily, and North Africa. In 204 BC, Rome invaded the Carthaginian homeland in Africa. This forced Hannibal to leave Italy to defend Carthage. He was eventually defeated at the Battle of Zama in 202 BC. A treaty in 201 BC stripped Carthage of its overseas territories and strictly limited its military power.

The Third Punic War began in 149 BC. This conflict was sparked when Carthage attempted to defend itself against Numidian encroachments. Rome used this as a reason to declare war.

Unlike the previous wars, this fighting took place entirely on Carthaginian territory in modern-day Tunisia. The war centered on the siege of the city of Carthage. In 146 BC, Roman forces stormed the city. They destroyed the city completely and took over the land as the Roman province of Africa.

Historians rely on several ancient writers to understand these events. The most important source is the Greek historian Polybius. He was a hostage in Rome who interviewed many people involved in the wars.

Stele des Polybios.jpg

His work, *The Histories*, is considered highly analytical and largely objective. Another major source is the Roman historian Livy. While Livy provided many details about Roman politics, his military descriptions are sometimes considered inaccurate by modern scholars. Because no Carthaginian accounts have survived, historians must also use coins, inscriptions, and archaeological evidence to piece together the full story.

The Punic Wars represent a massive shift in Mediterranean history. The wars moved control of the seas and vast territories from a North African empire to a growing Italian republic. Through these three wars, Rome transformed from a regional power into a massive empire. The total duration of the conflicts, including the Mercenary War, spanned many decades. The destruction of Carthage left a vacuum that Rome quickly filled, setting the stage for centuries of Roman rule in the West.
