Famous musicians like Franz Liszt even performed music written for these instruments.

Many companies made these organs during the 1800s and 1900s. In North America, millions of reed organs were made between 1850 and 1920. Large makers included the Estey Organ Company and Mason & Hamlin.

In Japan, the founder of Yamaha began making reed organs after repairing an American model. In China, factories like the Danfeng Organ Factory produced them for schools. These instruments were very important for music education in many different countries.

One specific type is the Indian harmonium, which is a small, portable, hand-pumped version. Another type is the melodeon, a name often used in Victorian-era America. In Japan, the foot-pumped version is called an ashibumi organ. These instruments vary greatly in size and complexity. Some are simple models with few stops, while others are housed in fine, ornate cabinets.

The history of the free reed began in the 18th century. A mouth organ called a sheng was brought to Russia during the first half of that century. Christian Gottlieb Kratzenstein, a professor in Copenhagen, is credited with creating the first Western free-reed instrument. He won a prize from the Imperial Academy of St. Petersburg in 1780. Later, Abbé Georg Joseph Vogler built the first free-reed organ based on Kratzenstein's ideas. In 1810, Gabriel-Joseph Grenié exhibited the orgue expressif, or expressive organ. Alexandre Debain improved this design and patented the name "harmonium" in 1840.

During the 19th century, the production of these instruments grew rapidly. Between 1850 and 1920, several million reed organs and melodeons were made in the United States and Canada.

Major manufacturers included the Estey Organ Company, the Cable Piano Company, and Mason & Hamlin. In the United States, a shift occurred after 1885 when the suction bellows became a standard technique. This change was adopted by the Mason & Hamlin firm in Boston. These instruments were also vital for global trade. Because they were more resilient than pianos, they were exported to colonies. They maintained their tuning in heat and humidity, and some were even treated with chemicals to resist tropical pests.

The instrument played a major role in music education across Asia. In Japan, the reed organ was introduced by Christian missionaries during the Meiji period.
