The second group consists of electrically amplified acoustic instruments, like an acoustic guitar with a pickup. The third group includes instruments that make sound primarily through electrically driven oscillators.

Modern ethnomusicologists often suggest a different way to classify these tools. Researchers like Margaret Kartomi and Terry Ellingson argue for focusing on the initial sound source. They suggest only the third subcategory should remain as true electrophones. Under this view, a pipe organ remains an aerophone because air produces the sound. An electric guitar is a chordophone because strings create the vibration. This approach keeps the classification consistent with the original spirit of the Hornbostel-Sachs system. It focuses on what first creates the sound before electricity is involved.

History shows that musicians have experimented with electricity for centuries. In 1753, the Denis d'or used over 700 strings to enhance its sound.
