Puebla, formally known as Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza, is a major urban center in central Mexico.

The history of the city begins with the Valley of Cuetlaxcoapan. This name means "where serpents change their skin." In the 15th century, this valley was used for "flower wars" between various indigenous populations. These wars involved groups like the Tlaxcala and Tepeaca. During these conflicts, soldiers were captured to be used as sacrifice victims. The valley was not inhabited by permanent settlements during the pre-Hispanic period. The foundation of the Spanish city began in 1531. This was prompted by a letter from Julián Garcés, the bishop of Tlaxcala. He wrote to the Spanish queen about the need for a settlement between the capital and the coast.
A famous legend explains the city's original name, Puebla de los Ángeles. According to the story, the bishop had a dream about a fertile valley. He saw woods, meadows, and clear rivers with fresh-water springs. In the dream, angels descended from heaven to trace the city's layout. This legend gave the city its nickname, Angelópolis, or City of Angels. The first attempt to settle the site on April 16, 1531, actually failed. The location was too close to the river and suffered from constant flooding. Most residents eventually moved to a higher site to avoid the water.
During the colonial era, Puebla became a highly important region in New Spain. It was the second most important city in the territory. The city was designed with a classic Spanish layout. It features a central main plaza known as the Zócalo. Originally, this plaza was rectangular, but it was later changed to a square shape. The city grew through trade and agriculture. It supplied the capital with commercial products and became a center for textiles. In 1538, the city received its official coat of arms.
The city's architecture is a significant part of its identity. Many buildings showcase the Mexican Baroque style. This is a highly decorative style of architecture. The Chapel of the Rosario is considered a masterpiece of this period.

Puebla has also been shaped by significant military conflicts. During the Mexican War of Independence, the city helped print and distribute independence plans. In 1862, Mexican forces led by Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the French army.

Today, the economy of Puebla is driven largely by industry. The metropolitan area is a massive manufacturing hub. It is home to the world's largest Volkswagen factory located outside of Germany.
