It is a genus that likely only had one species, called Pterodactylus antiquus. This animal was very important to science because it was the first pterosaur ever named. Scientists also recognized it as one of the first prehistoric reptiles ever found. It lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 150.8 to 148.5 million years ago. Most of its fossils were found in Solnhofen limestone in Bavaria, Germany.

This reptile had a very interesting way of flying. Its wings were made of a membrane of skin and muscle. This membrane stretched from a very long fourth finger to its back legs. To stay strong, the wing was supported by collagen fibers inside. It also had ridges made of keratin on the outside.

He even drew a picture of it using its wings like flippers.

Many famous scientists studied these fossils to solve the mystery. Johann Hermann was the first to realize the long finger supported the wing. He shared this idea with the French scientist Georges Cuvier in 1800. Cuvier was certain the animal was a reptile, not a mammal.

He even made a small mistake and named it "Petro-Dactyle" at first. Later, Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring described a second specimen in 1817. He thought the animal was like a bat, but he was wrong. These different ideas helped scientists learn more about how the animal lived.

Today, we know many specific details about how Pterodactylus looked. An adult had a long, thin skull with about 90 small, pointy teeth. These teeth were narrow and conical, helping it catch food.

This was approximately 150.8 to 148.5 million years ago. While most finds are in Germany, fragmentary remains have been tentatively identified in Africa and elsewhere in Europe. Pterodactylus was a generalist carnivore. This means it likely ate a wide variety of both invertebrates and vertebrates.

Understanding what Pterodactylus actually was took nearly a century of debate. The first specimen was described by the Italian scientist Collini in 1784. He did not realize it was a flying animal at all. Collini actually speculated it might be a sea creature. He believed the deep ocean was a likely home for unknown animals. Later, in 1830, Johann Georg Wagler also thought it was an aquatic animal. Wagler even drew an illustration of the animal using its wings as flippers.

Many famous scientists helped shape our modern understanding of the genus. In 1800, Johann Hermann suggested the long fourth finger supported a wing membrane. He shared this with Georges Cuvier, a prominent French scientist. While Hermann thought the animal was a mammal, Cuvier was convinced it was a reptile. Modern science has revealed much more about the physical appearance of Pterodactylus. Adult specimens had long, thin skulls containing about 90 narrow, conical teeth. These teeth were unique because they extended back into the jaw. Most of its relatives had teeth that were more uniform in size. The skull and jaws of Pterodactylus were also straight. This differs from other related ctenochasmatids, which had upwardly curved jaws.

Another fascinating feature was the crest found on the skull of many adults. This crest was composed mostly of soft tissues. In some specimens, it included a short bony base. There was also an "occipital lappet," which was a flexible, tab-like structure at the back of the skull. These crests likely served as display structures. They became larger and more developed as the animals reached maturity.

Pterodactylus belongs to the Pterodactyloidea clade. Specifically, it is an early-branching member of the ctenochasmatid lineage. It lived alongside other small pterosaurs like Rhamphorhynchus. It also shared its environment with genera such as Scaphognathus, Anurognathus, and Ctenochasma. Studying Pterodactylus helps scientists understand the early evolution of flight.
