Psychological research

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Psychologists study how people and groups act and think. They want to learn about our experiences. This work can help in schools or clinics. Wilhelm Wundt was one of the first to do this. He even made the first lab for this work.

Researchers must keep people safe. A group called an institutional review board checks study plans. They make sure the good parts of a study outweigh the risks. People must also give informed consent. This means they agree to help after learning the facts. They can stop at any time.

Experts use many ways to gather data. In an experiment, a researcher changes one thing. This is called an independent variable. They then watch for a change in behavior. This change is the dependent variable. They must watch for other things that might mess up results. These are called confounding variables. For example, Seymour Feshbach studied TV violence. He found that frustration was a confounding variable.

Some experts use observation. They might join a group to watch them. This is called participant observation. Others watch people in their natural homes. This is called naturalistic observation. They may also use case studies. These are deep studies of one person or group. Sigmund Freud used these to form his ideas.
