Province of Pennsylvania

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Province of Pennsylvania was a British colony on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard of North America. It served as a unique social and religious experiment in the New World. The colony was founded by William Penn, a religious thinker and Quaker. In 1681, King Charles II of England granted Penn the land. The name Pennsylvania comes from Latin words meaning "Penn's Woods." This name honored William's father, Admiral Sir William Penn. The Admiral was a famous naval commander who had served the English crown.

William Penn intended the colony to be a "Holy experiment." He wanted to lead a society guided by Christian Quaker values. The royal charter gave Penn significant freedom to run the colony. He provided settlers with liberal property rights and free trade. Most importantly, his Frame of Government granted the freedom of worship. This religious pluralism was very rare during that era. It attracted diverse groups like the Welsh Quakers and Mennonite Pennsylvania Germans.

Before European arrival, the Delaware and Susquehanna valleys were home to many people. The Lenape and Susquehannock people lived in these regions. In the 1620s, the discovery of the Beversreede, or beaver trade route, changed things. This route connected the Susquehanna River to the Schuylkill River. It made the area much more attractive to European explorers and traders.

Different European powers competed for control of the region. In 1626, the Swedish South Company was formed to establish a presence. They settled along the Delaware banks and grew tobacco and silk. They also traded in beaver pelts and timber. However, New Sweden was not a permanent settlement like other colonies. Many colonists returned to Sweden each year. The population peaked at only 600 people before the Dutch took control in 1654.

The Dutch controlled the area as part of New Netherland. They called the Delaware River the Zudyt, or South River. In 1667, the Treaty of Breda changed the map again. The Dutch ceded their Mid-Atlantic colonies to the English. This allowed the English to take over the land. In 1682, the town of Chester became the first English town in the colony. Shortly after, the capital city of Philadelphia was founded.

Pennsylvania experienced massive population growth during its first century. The population rose from 680 to 11,450 in the first ten years. By 1760, Philadelphia grew to over 20,000 inhabitants. This made it the largest city in British North America. Settlers also moved inland to places like Fort Pitt. Fort Pitt later became the city of Pittsburgh.

Relations with indigenous people were complex and changed over time. William Penn established a "Treaty of Friendship" with the Lenape. He sought to maintain amicable relations through fair dealings. However, his heirs did not follow this path. His son used a fraudulent deal called the Walking Purchase to take 1,200,932 acres. This caused great tension in the region.

Border disputes were also a major part of colonial history. Pennsylvania argued with New York over the 43rd parallel. This dispute was eventually settled at the 42nd parallel. There was also a long feud with the Calvert family of Maryland. This conflict led to the creation of the Mason–Dixon line in 1767. These boundaries helped define the geography of the colonies.
