Proto-language

A proto-language is a postulated ancestral language. It serves as the common ancestor for a group of languages known as a language family. Linguists often use the metaphor of a mother language to describe it. In a strict sense, it is the most recent common ancestor before a family begins to diverge. This ancestor is the source of many attested languages. These attested languages are those that we have actual records of. A proto-language can also describe the source of a dialect cluster. This is a group of speech varieties that are not considered separate languages.

Most proto-languages are unattested. This means we do not have direct written records of them. Instead, linguists use a process called the comparative method to reconstruct them. This method is a form of deduction. Experts look at a set of characters, or specific linguistic traits, in descendant languages. They try to find a single ancestral form that accounts for all these traits. If one proto-form explains everything, the resulting tree is called a phylogeny. A phylogeny is considered a complete explanation of how the languages relate.

Reconstructing these languages is a complex task. Not all linguistic data is useful for the comparative method. For example, loanwords can cause problems. A loanword is a word taken from a different language. These words do not reflect the true history of the language family. Using them can decrease the compatibility of the reconstruction. Linguists must carefully select the right dataset to ensure accuracy. They look for compatible characters to build the most credible tree possible.

History provides several important examples of this work. August Schleicher was the first to offer systematic reconstructions. In 1861, he performed this work for Proto-Indo-European. Some proto-languages are widely accepted by scholars. These include Proto-Afroasiatic, Proto-Uralic, and Proto-Dravidian. In some cases, we have actual written evidence. Latin is the proto-language for the Romance language family. This family includes French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan, and Spanish.

Other languages have fragmentary or oral evidence. Proto-Norse is the ancestor of modern Scandinavian languages. We see fragments of it in the Elder Futhark runes. The Indo-Aryan languages of modern India trace back to Vedic Sanskrit. This language was preserved through both oral and written traditions. There are also differences between terms like "Proto-X" and "Pre-X." Proto-X refers to the last common ancestor of a group. Pre-X refers to an even earlier stage of a single language. This is often found through a process called internal reconstruction.

Language evolution is not always a simple branching tree. Languages also undergo horizontal transfer. This happens when languages borrow from their neighbors. Because of this, no large language tree is ever truly perfect. This complexity led to the development of the wave model. The wave model helps explain differences in compatibility between languages. It shows that linguistic changes spread like waves across a map. This means the proto-language may not have had a perfectly uniform character.

There is significant debate regarding the accuracy of these reconstructions. Some researchers call the comparative method an intuitive undertaking. They suggest that linguists may have a personal bias. This bias might lead them to favor the average language type they know. There are also debates about the nature of the proto-language itself. Some scholars are realists who believe these languages truly existed. Others are abstractionists who see them as mathematical formulas. They believe the term is just an abstraction of many different dialects.
