Later, Arthur Hopwood found more fossils. He was on an expedition with Louis Leakey. They found three individuals near Lake Victoria in 1931. Hopwood gave the group its name in 1933. He named it Proconsul. This name means "before Consul."

There are four known species of Proconsul. They are P. africanus, P. gitongai, P. major, and P. meswae. These species mostly differ in body size.

Scientists have changed how they group these fossils. For example, Mary Leakey found a fossil in 1948. It was first called P. africanus. Later, Alan Walker reclassified it in 1993. He grouped it with finds from 1951. This made a new species called P. heseloni. Some species like P. nyanzae were moved to a new genus called Ekembo.

We can learn about their homes from the ground. The fossils were found in warm places. One site had a mean annual temperature above 25°C. It also had a lot of rain. The rain was about 2,000 mm each year.

This distinguishes it from gibbons and other nonhuman apes that live now. Because of this mix of monkey and ape features, its exact classification is still debated. Some scientists place it within the ape superfamily known as Hominoidea. Other scientists suggest it sits outside that group. They believe it may have existed before the split between apes and Old World monkeys.

The discovery of Proconsul changed our understanding of African fossils. In 1909, a gold prospector found a partial jaw at Koru, near Kisumu in western Kenya. This was a major event because it was the first fossil mammal ever found in sub-Saharan Africa. It also held the title of the oldest fossil hominoid known until recently. In 1931, Arthur Hopwood discovered fossils of three individuals while on an expedition with Louis Leakey. These fossils were found near Lake Victoria. Hopwood later named the genus in 1933.

The area even experienced occasional volcanic disturbances. These details help us picture the world as it was millions of years ago.
