This play is a funny story about a divorced couple. They meet by surprise while honeymooning at a hotel in France. Both people are staying in rooms right next to each other. They are there with their new spouses, but they still have feelings for one another. The play shows how they struggle with their messy relationship. It is a story about how love and hate can be very close together.

The story happens in three different acts. In the first act, the characters Elyot and Amanda meet at a hotel in Deauville.

They realize they still love each other and run away to a flat in Paris. In the second act, they use a secret code word, "Sollocks," to help stop their loud arguments. They fight very hard and even break things during their disagreements. In the third act, they decide to wait one year before getting a divorce. This gives them time to see if they truly want to be together again.

Noël Coward wrote this play in a very short amount of time. He was on a trip to Asia when he got the flu in Shanghai.

While he was resting for two weeks, he sketched out the ideas for the play. He finished the actual writing in only four days. He sent the work to his friend, the actress Gertrude Lawrence. She even went to a villa in France to learn her lines. Coward and Lawrence then rehearsed the scenes together before the play opened.

The play first opened in August 1930 in Edinburgh.
