A prison escape, often called a jailbreak or breakout, is when an inmate leaves a prison illegally.

This act is a serious matter for authorities. They work hard to recapture escaped individuals. In many places, escaping is a criminal offense. In the United States and Canada, it can add time to a sentence. These inmates often face increased security later. They might be moved to a maximum security or supermax prison. However, laws differ across the world. In Germany, escape is not always a crime. Some countries view the desire to escape as human nature. They see it as a violation of freedom. In these places, escape is not penalized unless it involves violence or property damage.

Prisons use many layers of security to prevent escapes.

Physical barriers are the first line of defense. These include high walls and barred windows. Fences are often topped with barbed wire or razor wire. Some prisons use electric fencing to stop intruders. Natural geography also plays a role in security. Historically, builders chose islands or mountains for prisons. These locations create territorial isolation from the outside world. Inside the walls, technology helps guards monitor the area. CCTV cameras allow for constant observation. Thermal cameras can detect heat signatures from moving people. Microwave or buried RF sensors alert staff to movement near fences. These tools work together to create a secure environment.

Inmates use various methods to bypass these security layers. One common starting point is a cell escape. Some prisoners are in solitary confinement for most of their time. They may try to leave through the door or a window. Others use the ventilation system or pick the cell locks. Some even tunnel underground to reach the outside. Once out of the cell, they must achieve containment penetration. This means breaking through the prison's physical boundaries. Inmates might destroy walls with homemade tools. They may use smuggled contraband to damage fences. Some prisoners scale fences when guards are not looking. They might wait for a guard to fall asleep. Others study the timing of perimeter patrols to find gaps.

Other methods involve human interaction and clever tactics. Deception is a common strategy used by escapees. An inmate might trick a guard into thinking they are authorized to leave. They might even disguise themselves as a civilian or a worker. Some prisoners build makeshift dummies to fool guards. These dummies are often made of papier-mâché and clothing. They look like a person sleeping in a bed. This gives the inmate a head start before anyone notices. Physical force is another method used in some escapes. Inmates may attack guards with weapons. They might even take over an entire section of the prison. This allows them to steal weapons or other useful items.

Sometimes, the escape happens outside the prison walls. Lower security inmates might leave for work or medical appointments. These are often called furloughs. If they do not return, it is considered an escape. Inmates can also escape while being transported to court. Outside help can also make an escape successful. An accomplice might provide a ride after the inmate breaks out. They might also smuggle in contraband during visits. In rare cases, people have used helicopters to aid escapes. Even island prisons have unique challenges. In the 1962 Alcatraz escape, inmates used a makeshift raft. This raft was constructed from raincoats. Some theories suggest a boat was used to help them cross the water.

Security is maintained through strict routines and guard placement.

Guards make regular rounds to check on inmates. High-risk inmates may receive a full-time, one-on-one watch. Guard towers allow officers to observe the edges of the compound. These guards are sometimes authorized to use deadly force. Perimeter patrols often use vehicles to circle the facility. Technology like video analytics can track objects near the perimeter. Alarms and sirens notify staff if a gate is opened. Routine head counts ensure the number of inmates is correct. Cell searches are also conducted to find hidden contraband. These combined efforts make escaping very difficult.

The history of escapes is long and varied. Different countries handle the legal consequences in different ways. In Russia, escaping can add up to four years to a sentence. In the United Kingdom, using force during an escape is called "breaking prison." In Virginia, the punishment depends on whether the inmate used fire or violence. These laws show how society views the act of escaping. While security technology continues to advance, inmates continue to find new ways to challenge it. This creates a constant cycle of new security measures and new escape methods.
