Princeton has a long and complex history dating back to the 1700s. It was founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey.
The founding grew from a split within the Presbyterian church. This happened during a period known as the Great Awakening. The founders wanted a college with an expansive curriculum. They did not want to train only ministers. They wanted to teach people for many different professions. The college was one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.
The institution has moved several times since its beginning. It first opened in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1747, the college moved to Newark. In 1756, it moved to its current location in Princeton. The main building there is Nassau Hall.
Nassau Hall has played a significant role in American history. During the American Revolution, British soldiers briefly occupied the building. In 1783, the Continental Congress met there for four months. This made Princeton the temporary capital of the United States.
Throughout the 19th century, the college faced many challenges and changes. President John Witherspoon helped the school grow during the late 1700s. He focused on both religious and secular leadership. Later, the school faced periods of low enrollment and student unrest. In 1854, Nassau Hall burned down and had to be rebuilt. During the American Civil War, the student body changed significantly. Many students from the South left the school. By 1896, the college officially became a university. This change brought the name Princeton University.
