This capsule eventually splits to release the seeds ballistically, or by shooting them out.

The name Primulaceae is attributed to August Batsch in 1794. Earlier, Carl Linnaeus grouped these plants in 1753 based on reproductive parts. He used a system called Hexandria Monogynia. Later, Jussieu organized them into different lineages in 1789. In 1905, Pax and Knuth provided a massive study of the family. They described nearly 1,000 species across 22 different genera. They divided the family into five specific tribes. These included Androsaceae, Cyclamineae, Lysimachieae, Samoleae, and Corideae.

Modern science has changed how we view this family.

Over time, they migrated to different parts of the world. For example, the Theophrastoideae subfamily is mostly found in the Neotropics. The Primuloideae subfamily moved into the Palearctic region. This movement helps scientists map how life spreads across the Earth.

Today, the family is organized into several distinct subfamilies. Maesoideae is a monogeneric subfamily, meaning it has only one genus. That genus is Maesa, which consists of trees. The other subfamilies include Myrsinoideae, Theophrastoideae, and Primuloideae. Myrsinoideae is quite large, containing up to 38 genera. The Primuloideae subfamily includes the famous genus Primula. Some scientific lists show as many as 55 accepted genera. These groups are all connected by shared traits like free central placentation. This complex history shows how much we are still learning about the natural world.
