They are much bigger than other cities in their land. This big city is often the most important place. It has many jobs and schools. Many people move there to live. This can make the city grow even more. Some big cities are also the place where leaders work. A city like Bangkok is a great example. It is much larger than other cities in its land. This city is not just big in size. It is also very important. Most of the money and power stays there. It often has the best schools and jobs. Many people move to these cities to find work. This makes the city grow even more.

In 1939, a man named Mark Jefferson studied this. He said a primate city must be twice as big as the next city. It must also be twice as important.

Some cities are famous examples. Istanbul is a primate city in Turkey. Bangkok is also a very strong example. In the year 2000, Bangkok was 40 times larger than the next city.

Not every place has a primate city. The United States does not have one for the whole country. New York City is very big, but Los Angeles is close behind. However, New York City is a primate city for the state of New York. It is 32 times bigger than Buffalo.

This pattern creates a special way of looking at a country. Most cities are part of a steady hierarchy of sizes. In a primate city system, one huge city stands alone. It is much larger than the second-largest city. This creates a statistical effect called the king effect.

How does a primate city work? It usually holds most of a country's power. This includes its money, politics, and culture. It often has the best schools and most jobs. Because of this, many people move there from other areas. This movement is called internal migration. This can lead to a high concentration of people. Some call this urban primacy or urban macrocephaly. This might happen because of changes in how people work. As machines take over farm jobs, more people move to cities. They seek white-collar jobs in finance, media, or politics.

We can trace this idea back to 1939. A geographer named Mark Jefferson first proposed the law. He had a specific way to define these cities. He said a primate city must be at least twice as large as the next city. It must also be more than twice as significant. There is still a debate about these cities today. Some think they help a country grow. Others think they act like a parasite. They might cause an imbalance between a rich center and a poor edge.

Many famous places are primate cities. Istanbul in Turkey is a great example. It has more influence than Ankara, İzmir, or Bursa. Bangkok in Thailand is an even stronger example. In the year 2000, it was 40 times larger than Nakhon Ratchasima. Moscow in Russia is also a primate city. Its metropolitan area is 2.3 times the size of Saint Petersburg. Other examples include Paris, Cairo, Jakarta, and Seoul. Not every place has one, though. The United States does not have a national primate city. New York City is huge, but Los Angeles is not far behind.

Primate cities can exist in smaller areas too. New York City is a primate city for the state of New York. It is 32 times bigger than Buffalo. In Alaska, Anchorage holds about 40% of the total population. Some countries try to fix this imbalance. They might build a new capital city. Tanzania moved its capital to Dodoma in 1996. They did this to help the country grow more evenly. Even so, Dar es Salaam remains the primate city.

A primate city is a massive urban center that dominates its country, province, or region. It is not just the largest city in its area. It is also disproportionately larger than any other city in the urban hierarchy. This creates a specific pattern called a primate city distribution. In this system, one giant city exists alongside many much smaller towns. There are no intermediate-sized cities to bridge the gap between the huge center and the small towns. This creates a statistical phenomenon known as the king effect.

The concept was first defined by geographer Mark Jefferson in 1939. He proposed the law of the primate city to explain these uneven urban patterns. Jefferson stated that a primate city must be at least twice as large as the next largest city. He also noted it must be more than twice as significant. Beyond mere population, these cities hold immense power. They lead in economics, politics, culture, and education. This concentration of influence makes them the primary targets for internal migration. People move from rural areas to these cities seeking better opportunities.

Geographers use specific terms to describe this intense concentration of people and development. This phenomenon is called urban primacy or urban macrocephaly. One way to measure this is by looking at the share of a country's population living in the primate city. Another method is measuring relative primacy. This is the ratio of the primate city's population to the second-largest city. Some researchers debate the impact of this structure. Some argue these cities have a generative function that drives growth. Others suggest they act as a parasite. This can create an imbalance between a progressive core and a lagging periphery. This periphery provides the labor and resources that the central city needs to function.

Primate cities often grow due to shifts in how people work. In many regions, mechanization and automation reduce the need for blue-collar workers in rural areas. At the same time, the demand for white-collar workers increases. These employees work in sectors like finance, media, politics, and higher education. These professional sectors cluster in primate cities where wealth and power are already concentrated. This creates a cycle that continues to pull more people and resources into the main urban center.

Many famous global cities serve as primate cities. Istanbul is a notable example in Turkey. It holds unmatched economic and cultural influence compared to cities like Ankara, İzmir, or Bursa. Moscow in Russia is another example. Its metropolitan area is 2.3 times the size of Saint Petersburg. In Thailand, Bangkok is often called the most primate city on Earth. In the year 2000, Bangkok was 40 times larger than the second-largest city, Nakhon Ratchasima. By 2022, it remained nearly nine times larger than Chiang Mai. Other major examples include Paris, Cairo, Jakarta, and Seoul.

Not every country or region has a primate city. The United States is a major exception at the national level. The country is decentralized, and its largest cities are relatively close in size. In 2022, New York City's metropolitan area had over 19 million residents. Los Angeles followed with roughly 13 million residents. However, primate cities can exist within smaller sub-national divisions. New York City is the primate city of New York State. Its population is 32 times larger than Buffalo. It contains 44% of the state's population and 65% of its GDP. In Alaska, Anchorage holds about 40% of the total state population.

Some governments try to change these patterns by building new capitals. The goal is often to provide more balanced growth across the country. New Zealand moved its capital from Auckland to Wellington in 1865. Even though Wellington is the capital, Auckland still holds a greater share of the economy and population. Tanzania took a similar step in 1996. They moved the capital to the planned city of Dodoma. Despite this change, Dar es Salaam remains the primate city of the country. This shows that moving a political center does not always stop a city from maintaining its primacy.
