How a city becomes a metropolis can change over time. In the past, one single city usually led its area. Today, many large urban areas are "polycentric." This means they have many centers working together. For example, the Tokyo–Osaka corridor and southern California are seen as modern metropolises. These regions include many different cities instead of just one. They all work together to help the economy grow.

The word has a very old history. It comes from two Greek words. One word means "mother" and the other means "city."

A metropolis is a large city or a massive urban area known as a conurbation. It serves as a vital center for a country or a specific region. These areas act as significant hubs for economic, political, and cultural activities. They also provide essential connections for international commerce and global communications. A metropolis is more than just a place with a high population. It must perform specific functions that influence its surrounding territory. If a large city is part of a bigger urban group but is not the center, it is not a metropolis. Instead, it is simply a part of that larger agglomeration.

The term has a very deep history rooted in ancient languages. It comes from two Greek words: "meter," meaning mother, and "polis," meaning city. In antiquity, Greek colonies used this term to describe their original home cities. These mother cities maintained strong political and cultural links with their newer settlements. In post-classical Latin, the word referred to the chief city of a province. It often marked the seat of government or a religious center. For example, it described the see of a metropolitan bishop. In a religious context, the term was used in sixth-century Canterbury. By the 16th century, the word began to describe large secular cities like London.

Modern urban growth has changed how we define these massive areas. In the past, one single city usually dominated its entire region. Today, many large urban areas are polycentric. This means they have multiple centers of activity rather than just one. For instance, the Tokyo–Osaka corridor and the southern California built-up area are considered modern metropolises. These regions encompass many different cities that work together. This shift reflects how modern economies function across wider geographic spaces.

Different nations use specific rules to define a metropolis. In the United States, a population of 50,000 is often a standard. The U.S. Census Bureau uses the term Metropolitan Statistical Area for these regions. New York is the largest metropolis in the United States. . In Brazil, the term refers to a Região Metropolitana. The Greater São Paulo is a massive metropolis with over 21 million inhabitants. In cities like Rio de Janeiro, which has 12 million people, favelas have grown over decades. These are large slums created as people move from rural areas to find work.

. Other major Chinese cities include Beijing, Tianjin, and Chongqing. In India, the Constitution defines a metropolitan area as having 1 million or more people. India has 23 metropolitan cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Japan has a unique legal term for its metropolis, which is Tokyo. Tokyo is structured like a prefecture rather than a normal city.

Europe also has unique ways of using the term. In France, a "métropole" can refer to the mainland part of the country. This excludes overseas departments. France also allows groups of communes to form a larger administrative division called a métropole. The city of Lyon is one such example. In Germany, the importance of a metropolis is measured by three specific functions. These are the decision-making function, the innovation function, and the gateway function. The Rhine-Ruhr area is the largest metropolitan area in Germany, with more than 10 million people.

Metropolises are essential to how the world is organized. They connect local people to global systems of trade and ideas. Whether it is the skyline of Paris or the busy streets of Manila, these cities drive progress.

They represent the concentration of human activity and the complexity of modern life. Researchers even use the term "regiopolis" for smaller urban areas that attract people similarly. This shows that the study of how cities grow and connect is always changing.
