The geography of Praia is defined by a series of plateaus and valleys. In Portuguese, these volcanic plateaus are called achada. Examples include Achada de Santo António and Achada Grande. The urban settlement is built mostly on top of these plateaus. Some neighborhoods also extend along the valleys between them. For a long time, the central Plateau was considered the main city. Other neighborhoods were viewed as peripheral suburbs. After independence, these areas merged into the modern City of Praia. The islet of Santa Maria sits just in front of the beach.
Praia has a complex and strategic history. António da Noli discovered Santiago island in 1460. The village of Praia de Santa Maria was first mentioned around 1615. It grew quickly due to its proximity to a natural harbor. The ports of Santiago were important stops for ships. These ships traveled between Portugal and colonies in Africa and South America. Between the late 16th and late 18th centuries, pirates frequently attacked the area. Famous pirates like Francis Drake and Jacques Cassard targeted the region. Because Praia sits on a high plateau, it offered better protection than Ribeira Grande. This advantage helped Praia become the capital in 1770.
Significant historical events took place in and around the city. In 1781, a naval battle occurred at Praia Harbour. This battle involved Great Britain and France. While Portugal remained neutral, the fight ended in a tactical draw. The French achieved a strategic victory.

The climate in Praia is classified as a desert climate. It features a short wet season and a long dry season. Most rain falls during August, September, and October. Outside of these months, very little precipitation occurs. Although the climate is arid, the temperature remains relatively constant. This is because of the city's location on the ocean. It rarely becomes extremely hot or extremely cold.
Education is a major feature of life in Praia. The city is home to the archipelago's first primary school. This was originally called the Escola Central.
