However, a wheel from the Cucuteni–Trypillia culture in western Ukraine is even older. It dates back to the middle of the 5th millennium BC. Egypt is also thought to be a place of origin. In Egypt, around 3000 BC, people added a flywheel to the machine. This helped the wheel move more easily for the potter.

Today, we see many different kinds of wheels in use. Some potters use a kick-wheel, which they move with their feet.

While most cultures spin the wheel counterclockwise with the right hand on the outside, Japanese traditions often spin clockwise with the right hand inside the pot.

There are also mechanical extensions of the wheel used for specific types of pottery. One method is called jiggering, which is used to create flat ware like plates. In jiggering, a shaped tool is slowly pressed onto plastic clay sitting on a rotating plaster mould. The tool shapes one face while the mould shapes the other. A similar technique is called jolleying, which is used to produce hollow ware such as cups.

Before the invention of the wheel, civilizations relied on manual techniques like pinching, coiling, and paddling. In the coiling method, potters roll clay into long threads and pinch them together. This process requires the potter to supply all the energy with their hands. Early potters often worked on mats or large leaves to allow them to rotate the vessel easily.

The oldest wheels, known as tournettes or slow wheels, were likely extensions of this manual rotation. Around 3500 BC in the Near East, these were turned slowly by hand or foot.

History shows a major shift with the development of the fast wheel in the mid to late 3rd millennium BC. This machine operated on the flywheel principle, using a heavy rotating mass to store energy. Potters would kick or push the wheel to provide angular momentum.

Meanwhile, Chinese pottery history spans from the Neolithic era around 4300 BC to 2000 BC. China focused heavily on porcelain, especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties from 1644 to 1911.

Modern technology has introduced electric wheels, which are common in schools and studios.
