They also wanted to create a new order for the world.

These helpers played a very key role in the discussions. The leaders held many meetings over several weeks. Sometimes they met in large groups, and sometimes they met in smaller ones. They even set up special committees to look at questions before the big meetings. This helped them work through many difficult topics step by step.

There were many changes in leadership during the conference itself. Winston Churchill was the British prime minister when it started.

However, a general election happened in the United Kingdom during the meeting. This meant Clement Attlee replaced Churchill as the leader of Britain. In the United States, Harry S. Truman was the president. He had taken over after Franklin D. Roosevelt died in April 1945. Truman was the only person to meet Joseph Stalin from the Soviet Union in person.

The leaders made several huge decisions about how the world would look. They decided to divide Germany and Austria into four occupation zones.

This new border was a very big change for the map. They also recognized a Soviet-backed government in Poland. In Vietnam, they decided to divide the land at the 16th parallel. These choices changed how many countries were organized for a long time.

Finally, the leaders worked on how to rebuild Germany safely. They wanted to make sure Germany became a democratic country. This meant they had to stop all Nazi activity and laws. They also wanted to take away Germany's military power completely. The leaders planned to put war criminals on trial for their actions. They hoped these steps would help create a lasting and just peace. Even though they worked together, new tensions began to grow between the nations soon after.

It took place from July 17 to August 2 in Potsdam, Germany. The leaders of the three main Allied powers met to plan for postwar peace. They wanted to avoid mistakes made during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. The participants represented the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Their primary goal was to decide how to manage Germany after its surrender.

The conference was organized through several layers of meetings and committees. The heads of government met with their foreign ministers and various aides.

For example, Vyacheslav Molotov represented the Soviets, while James F. Byrnes represented the Americans. Smaller committees were also appointed to study specific questions before the main leaders discussed them. These groups met daily to prepare for the larger sessions. This structured approach helped the leaders work through many complicated international issues.

Leadership changed significantly while the conference was in progress. At the start, Winston Churchill was the British prime minister. However, a general election in the United Kingdom changed the British leadership.

Clement Attlee replaced Churchill, and Ernest Bevin became the new Foreign Secretary. In the United States, Harry S. Truman was serving as president. He had assumed office after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 1945. Truman was the only leader to meet Joseph Stalin, the Soviet General Secretary, in person.

During the meetings, several major geopolitical shifts were decided. The leaders agreed to divide Germany and Austria into four occupation zones. These zones were shared among the three powers and France.

They also decided to shift Germany's eastern border to the Oder-Neisse line.

This move changed the map of Europe significantly. Additionally, the conference recognized a Soviet-backed government in Poland. In Vietnam, the leaders decided to partition the country at the 16th parallel.

The Allies also established strict rules for the future of Germany. They focused on several key goals: demilitarization, denazification, democratization, decentralization, dismantling, and decartelization. Demilitarization meant they would abolish the German air, land, and naval forces. They also dissolved organizations like the SS, the SA, and the Gestapo. Denazification aimed to destroy the Nazi Party and all its affiliated groups. The leaders wanted to prevent any future Nazi activity in the country. They also planned to abolish all Nazi laws that allowed for discrimination.

Justice for the war was another major part of the agenda. The leaders worked to establish methods for trying Nazi war criminals. They followed the guidelines of the Moscow Declaration from October 1943. These criminals were to be held accountable for their actions without geographical restrictions. The Allies also aimed to reconstruct German political life into a democratic state. They believed that a democratic Germany was necessary for a lasting peace. This process included preparing for the reconstruction of all German political institutions.

While the leaders cooperated, there was also growing tension between the nations. Truman became increasingly suspicious of Soviet actions in Eastern Europe. He saw these moves as aggressive expansionism that went against previous agreements. During the conference, Truman was also secretly informed about the successful Trinity test. This was the first successful test of an atomic bomb on July 16. He hinted to Stalin that the United States had a new kind of weapon. Although Stalin had learned about the project through espionage, this was the first official information provided.

The Potsdam Conference had a complex impact on world history. On one hand, the collaboration helped establish the Council of Foreign Ministers. This group was created to resolve remaining issues in the future. The leaders felt they could work together to ensure a just peace. However, the relationship between the superpowers began to change quickly. Within 18 months, relations deteriorated significantly. This shift led to the emergence of the Cold War, which shaped the world for decades.
