Potassium citrate

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Potassium citrate is a chemical compound known as a potassium salt of citric acid. It has the molecular formula K3C6H5O7. This substance appears as a white, crystalline powder. It is odorless, but it has a saline taste similar to salt. One important feature of this powder is that it is hygroscopic. This means it can soak up moisture from the air. In its monohydrate form, it is highly hygroscopic and even deliquescent. Deliquescent means it can absorb enough water to dissolve into a liquid.

Scientists create potassium citrate through a process called neutralization. To start, they begin with citric acid. They then add specific substances to the acid. These can include potassium bicarbonate, potassium carbonate, or potassium hydroxide. This chemical reaction creates the salt. After the reaction, the resulting solution is filtered to remove impurities. Finally, the solvent is evaporated until the substance turns into small grains or granulation.

This compound is very useful in medicine. It is an alkaline salt, which means it helps reduce acidity. Doctors often use it to treat urinary calculi, which are kidney stones. It is also used for bladder stones. Patients with cystinuria often use it as well. It can help manage stones made of uric acid or cystine. Because it is alkaline, it can reduce pain and how often a person needs to urinate. This is helpful when urine is highly acidic. A systematic review showed it significantly reduces the chance of kidney stones forming.

Potassium citrate is also used to help with heart health. It can manage arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat. This is specifically used if a patient is hypokalemic. Hypokalemia means the patient has low levels of potassium in their body. The body absorbs potassium citrate very quickly when it is taken by mouth. After it is absorbed, the body excretes it through the urine.

In the United States, this substance is a very common medication. In the year 2020, it was the 297th most commonly prescribed drug. More than one million prescriptions were written during that year. Because of its properties, it is also used in veterinary medicine. It is used to help dogs and cats. In these animals, it is often used as a non-irritating diuretic. A diuretic is a substance that helps the body get rid of excess water.

Beyond medicine, potassium citrate has many everyday uses. It is a common food additive labeled as E332. In many soft drinks, it acts as a buffering agent. A buffering agent helps regulate the acidity of the drink. It can also be used as a wet chemical fire suppressant. This is particularly useful for fighting kitchen fires. It works through two main steps. First, its alkaline pH encourages saponification. This process insulates the fuel from oxidizing air. Second, it triggers an endothermic dehydration reaction. This reaction absorbs heat energy to lower the temperature of the fire.

There are different ways to administer potassium citrate to people. It can be taken as a liquid or in pill form. Some pills are designed as extended-release formulations to work over time. Liquid potassium citrate is usually given in a diluted aqueous solution. This is because the substance can have a caustic effect on the stomach lining. Being caustic means it can irritate or damage tissue. Diluting it helps prevent these mild health hazards.
