Postmodern music

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Postmodern music is a complex way of making and thinking about sound. It is not a single, specific musical style like jazz or rock. Instead, it refers to music produced during the postmodern era. It also describes music that follows the philosophical trends of postmodernism. This movement is not defined only by being against modernism. Rather, it is an attitude toward how music is made and understood. Many thinkers see it as a way to understand our current historical moment.

The mechanism of postmodern music involves breaking down old categories. In the past, music analysis often relied on strict binaries. These were pairs of opposites like subject versus object or unity versus disunity. Music critic Rebecca Day suggests these binaries can dehumanize music analysis. Postmodernism moves away from these rigid divisions. It prefers a system of many ideas over a single, strict ethos. Musicians use various strategies to create this effect. They might use bricolage, which is making something from many different parts. They also use polystylism to mix many musical styles together.

There are many distinct characteristics that define this musical attitude. Lawrence Kramer identified 16 specific traits of postmodern music. One major trait is irony, where the music has a playful or layered meaning. Another trait is the removal of barriers between "high" and "low" styles. This means the music does not separate elite art from popular music. It also avoids totalizing forms. A totalizing form is a piece that stays entirely in one style, like being purely tonal. Postmodern music embraces contradictions and pluralism. It also views technology as a core part of musical production.

The history of postmodern music is a subject of much debate. Some scholars place its beginnings in the arts around 1930. Others look to the late 1960s for its emergence in popular music. During this time, psychedelic rock and later Beatles albums were influential. Theorist Fredric Jameson argues that postmodernism is the cultural result of late capitalism. He believes globalization ties postmodern culture closely to capitalism. This makes postmodernism feel like an inevitability in our modern, fragmented world.

Significant thinkers have provided different ways to measure this movement. Theodor Adorno identified a trend toward losing dominant cultural values as early as 1938. He noted that the commodification of genres was changing music. Daniel Albright summarizes the main tendencies as bricolage, polystylism, randomness, and timescale. These elements help define how the music feels to a listener. The movement is characterized by fragmentation and discontinuity. It does not try to make every part of a piece match perfectly.

Postmodern music offers surprising ways to experience sound. It often includes quotations or references to many different cultures. This creates a sense of eclecticism, which means drawing from many sources. The music also challenges the idea of structural unity. It does not require a piece to have one single, perfect shape. Instead, it might use multiple temporalities, or different speeds of time. This makes the listening experience very diverse and complex.

Finally, postmodern music connects to broader social and political systems. It does not view music as an autonomous or isolated thing. Instead, it sees music as relevant to cultural and social contexts. It also changes where meaning is found. In many musical traditions, meaning comes from the composer or the score. In postmodernism, meaning is often located in the listener. The listener's own experience helps shape what the music means. This connects music to the wider way we process information today.
