This means more people take cruise ships from here than anywhere else. Over 7.2 million people pass through the port each year. The port also moves a lot of cargo. Cargo is goods or products moved by ship. It is a major gateway for trade in the Americas.

The port is built on a special island. It was made by joining three smaller islands together. These are Dodge, Lummus, and Sam's islands. Workers used dirt from digging new channels to make them bigger. This created one large, artificial island. To help ships, the port uses dredging. Dredging is a way to dig out the bottom of the sea. This makes the water deeper so big ships can fit. The port has many terminals. These are the buildings where people board ships. Some terminals are for one company. Others are shared by many companies. PortMiami helps many people find work in Florida.

The port is built on a special kind of land. It is located on Dodge, Lummus, and Sam's Islands. These were three separate islands in the past. Workers joined them together to make one big artificial island. To make the water deep enough for ships, they use dredging. Dredging is a way to dig out the bottom of the sea. This process creates deeper paths called channels. This allows very large ships to reach the docks safely. The port also uses a tunnel to connect to the mainland. This tunnel helps cars get to the port without getting stuck in city traffic.

History shows how the port grew over time. In the early 1900s, workers dug a new channel called Government Cut. This helped ships reach downtown Miami much more easily. The dirt from that digging actually helped create the islands. In 1960, leaders approved plans to build modern facilities there. The port is named for Dante Fascell. He was a member of the Florida House of Representatives. He served for forty years from 1955 until 1993.

Many different companies use the many terminals at the port. There are ten passenger terminals used as of early 2026. Some terminals serve only one company. For example, Terminal V is only for Virgin Voyages. Terminal A serves the Royal Caribbean Group. Terminal B is for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. Terminal AA opened for MSC Cruises on April 5, 2025. The port also hosts the Icon of the Seas. This is the largest cruise ship in the world by gross tonnage. Over 7.2 million passengers pass through each year.

Cargo is another very important part of the port. It is called the Cargo Gateway of the Americas.

PortMiami, formally known as the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami, is a massive seaport located in Biscayne Bay. It sits at the mouth of the Miami River in Florida. This facility is the largest passenger port in the world. It is also one of the largest cargo ports in the United States. The port is a vital part of the local economy. As of 2023, it accounts for approximately 334,500 jobs. It also generates an annual economic revenue of $43 billion for the state of Florida.

The physical location of the port is quite unique. It is built on Dodge, Lummus, and Sam's Islands. Originally, these were three separate, historic islands. Over time, they were combined into one large, artificial island. This was achieved by using fill material to enlarge the islands and connect them. The port is connected to Downtown Miami by Port Boulevard, which is a causeway over the Intracoastal Waterway. It also connects to Watson Island via the PortMiami Tunnel. This tunnel was completed in 2014 to help vehicles bypass downtown traffic.

The history of the port began with dredging in the early 1900s. Workers dredged Government Cut and a new channel leading to Bicentennial Park. This created the Main Channel, which improved shipping access to the mainland. Interestingly, the islands themselves were created inadvertently. The dredging spoils were disposed of on the south side of the new channel. These piles of earth eventually became the islands that form the port today. In 1960, the Dade County Board of Commissioners approved plans for modern seaport facilities. This led to the construction of seawalls, administrative buildings, and bridges.

Passenger operations are a major part of the port's identity. It is often called the cruise capital of the world. More than 7.2 million cruise passengers pass through the port each year. As of January 2026, there are ten operating passenger terminals. These include terminals AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, and V. Some terminals are purpose-built for specific companies. For example, Terminal V serves Virgin Voyages exclusively. Terminal A serves the Royal Caribbean Group. Terminal B is used by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Many companies have invested in new, specialized facilities at the port. Royal Caribbean completed a redevelopment of Terminal A, called the "Crown of Miami," in 2018. This terminal can handle the massive Icon-class ships. Norwegian Cruise Line opened its Terminal B, the "Pearl of Miami," in August 2021. Virgin Voyages completed Terminal V in February 2022. MSC Cruises is also expanding with the Terminal AA/AAA complex. This $300 million project includes two berths that can operate at the same time.

Cargo operations are just as important as passenger travel. PortMiami is known as the "Cargo Gateway of the Americas." It is the largest container port in Florida and the ninth largest in the U.S. Each year, over 9.6 million tons of cargo move through the seaport. The port handles many types of goods, including containers, vehicles, and industrial equipment. China is the largest trade partner for the port. However, Honduras ranks first in terms of trade value. Computers are the most valuable export. Meanwhile, insulated wire and cable are the most valuable imports.

To stay competitive, the port uses advanced technology and infrastructure. It features gantry crane wharves, Ro-Ro docks, and refrigerated yards. The port even uses super post-panamax gantry cranes. These are some of the largest cranes in the world. They can load or unload mega container ships that are nearly 200 feet wide. To keep ships moving, the port uses dredging to deepen the harbors. This allows even larger vessels, like the Maersk Triple E Class, to use the facility.
