Miami is a major coastal city in Florida, located in the United States.

The city is a vital hub for global finance, culture, and international trade. It is the county seat of Miami-Dade County. The Miami metropolitan area is a massive economic engine. In 2023, its gross domestic product reached $533.674 billion. This makes it the largest urban economy in the state of Florida. The region is also a major destination for travelers. In 2022, over four million people visited the metropolitan area.
Miami's skyline is one of the most recognizable in the country. It ranks as the third-largest skyline in the United States. The city contains over 300 high-rise buildings. At least 70 of these buildings exceed 400 feet in height. Downtown Miami serves as the central business district. It has a high concentration of international banks. This area also hosts many large national and international companies.
The history of the region began long before modern cities existed. The Tequesta tribe lived in the area for about 2,000 years. They had a village near the mouth of the Miami River around 500 to 600 BCE. Later, Spain claimed the territory in 1566. The United States eventually gained control of Florida in 1821. Miami is unique because it was founded by a woman named Julia Tuttle. She was a citrus grower from Cleveland. Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler to extend his railroad to the region. Because of this, she is known as the "mother of Miami."
The city's identity is shaped by its diverse population. As of 2020, 70.2 percent of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino. This makes Miami the second-largest U.S. city with a Spanish-speaking majority. Because of these cultural ties, people call it the "Gateway to Latin America." The city also has a large Cuban-American plurality. This multicultural foundation supports the city's role as an international center.
Geology plays a huge role in how the city functions. The bedrock is made of Miami limestone, also called Miami oolite. This rock formed from shells and oolites during past ice ages. When sea levels were high, a shallow sea covered southern Florida. This process created the limestone we see today. Beneath the surface lies the Biscayne Aquifer. This is a natural underground source of fresh water. Most people in the metropolitan area use this aquifer for drinking water.
The presence of the aquifer affects urban design and transportation. The water table is very close to the surface. This makes it difficult to dig deep underground. Because of this, many mass transit systems are elevated. You will often see trains or buses on tracks above the ground. This helps avoid hitting the water during construction. The city must manage its growth carefully due to these geological limits.
Miami is also a leader in specialized sectors like healthcare. The Health District is a major center for medical research. It includes the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine. The area is home to Jackson Memorial Hospital. This is the largest hospital in the nation with 1,547 beds.
