In the 1800s, the port began moving west toward the North Sea. A man named Pieter Caland designed a large canal called the Nieuwe Waterweg. This canal connects the Rhine and Meuse rivers to the sea. It was ready for use in 1872. People had to dig parts of it by hand. Since then, the canal has been deepened many times to help bigger ships.

The port area covers a huge distance and has many different sections. One section is the Europoort, which acts as a gate to Europe. Another area is the Maasvlakte, which was built out into the North Sea. In 2020, it was the tenth-largest container port in the world. The port also has a very deep area called the EECV-quay. It has a draft of 24 metres, which is 78 feet deep.

Because it is near the sea, the port must stay safe from storms. A huge flood barrier called the Maeslantkering protects the area. The port handles many types of cargo, including petrochemicals and general goods. Goods move from the sea to the continent via ships, river barges, trains, or roads. Since 2000, the Betuweroute railway has helped move cargo quickly to Germany. This infrastructure makes Rotterdam a central pillar of global trade.

Moving goods through such a large area requires complex engineering.

Much of the container handling is now done by autonomous robotic systems. At the Delta terminal, unmanned automated guided vehicles, or AGVs, move containers. These AGVs follow a magnetic grid built into the terminal tarmac to navigate. They use infrared "eyes" to identify each container they carry.

Once an AGV delivers a container, unmanned automated stacking cranes (ASC) move it to a storage yard. This high level of automation makes the Delta terminal known as "the ghost terminal."

The port is composed of several distinct areas and specialized zones. It includes the historic city centre harbour, such as Delfshaven and the Oude Haven. Other major sections include the Waalhaven, Vondelingenplaat, and the Eemhaven. The Europoort complex serves as a "gate to Europe" along the Nieuwe Waterweg. Further out in the North Sea lies the reclaimed Maasvlakte area.

The port also manages five separate port concessions. These are operated by different companies under the authority of the Port of Rotterdam. This structure allows for specialized management across the vast territory.

Historically, the port has moved westward to keep up with industrial growth. In the first half of the 19th century, activities shifted toward the North Sea. To improve sea access, Pieter Caland designed the Nieuwe Waterweg. This large canal connects the Rhine and Meuse rivers to the ocean.

Workers partly dug the canal and then used the natural water flow to deepen it. Some sections still required manual labour to finish. The canal was ready in 1872 and sparked massive industrial activity along its banks. Since then, the waterway has been deepened several times to accommodate larger vessels.

The scale of the port is reflected in its impressive measurements. In 2020, Rotterdam was the world's tenth-largest container port by TEU.

It was also the tenth-largest cargo port by annual tonnage that year. The EECV-quay is deep enough to handle massive bulk carriers. It has a draft of 24 metres, or 78 feet. This allows the MS Berge Stahl, one of the world's largest iron ore ships, to dock. The ship has a 23-metre draft, leaving only 1 metre of clearance. Because of this, such ships must use the Eurogeul waterway and time their arrival with tides.

Because the port sits in the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta, it faces storm surges. To protect the area, engineers built the Maeslantkering flood barrier between 1991 and 1997.

This barrier consists of two enormous gates kept in a dry dock. When a high water level is predicted, the dry dock is flooded. This causes the gates to rotate around a pivot and float into position. Once the water recedes, the gates are floated back into their docks. This system, part of the Delta Works, is essential for keeping the port and city safe.

Sustainability is a major focus for the future of the port. The Port of Rotterdam aims to be emissions-free by the year 2050. The skyline now includes many wind turbines to use coastal winds for energy. The Port Authority also uses the Internet of Things to collect data from sensors. This cloud-based platform helps manage port operations more efficiently. In 2018, a €5 million incentive scheme was launched to encourage climate-friendly shipping. These efforts help the port balance massive industrial output with environmental protection.
