Popcorn is a fun snack.

Popcorn is a very old snack.
Inside each seed is a little water. When we heat the seed, the water turns to steam. The steam builds up inside the hard shell.
Soon, the shell pops open! The corn puffs up to be very big. It can grow 50 times its size.
You can eat it with salt. Some people like butter or sugar. It is a yummy treat for everyone.
Popcorn is a snack that people have loved for a long time.

How does it pop? Each kernel has a hard shell. Inside the shell is a starchy part and a little water. When you heat the kernel, the water turns to steam. The steam builds up pressure inside the shell. Soon, the shell breaks! The starch puffs up into a white foam. It can grow 20 to 50 times its original size.
There are different kinds of popcorn. White popcorn is soft and sweet. Yellow popcorn is larger and crunchier.

There are many interesting facts about how we make and sell popcorn.

Popcorn has changed how we enjoy movies and treats.

Popcorn is a unique variety of corn kernel that expands into a light snack when heated.

The science of popping relies on the specific structure of the kernel. Each kernel contains a hard, starchy endosperm and a small amount of moisture. The outer layer, called the hull or pericarp, is very strong and holds moisture inside.
Not all corn is suitable for this process. Popcorn belongs to the species Zea mays, which includes other types like dent, flint, pod, flour, and sweet corn. The most common variety used for popping is Zea mays everta. This is a specific type of flint corn grown for its high popping yield.

Archaeological evidence shows a long history of popcorn use. Corn was domesticated roughly 9,000 years ago in the Balsas River Valley of Central Mexico. Fossil evidence from Peru suggests corn was present there as early as 4,700 BCE. Researchers found macrofossil cobs at the Paredones and Huaca Prieta sites in Peru. These findings suggest people were popping corn there over 1,000 years ago. In the United States, researchers discovered evidence of popping corn in New Mexico. This was found in rock shelters called the "Bat Cave" by students from Harvard. These findings were attributed to the Ancestral Puebloan peoples.
In the 19th century, popping corn was a much slower process. People typically popped kernels by hand over an open flame on a stove. The term "popped corn" first appeared in a dictionary in 1848. A major change occurred in the 1880s when Charles Cretors invented a popcorn maker.
Popcorn has also played a significant role in the economy. During the Great Depression, popcorn was an inexpensive treat at only 5 to 10 cents per bag. This allowed the popcorn business to thrive while other industries struggled. During World War II, sugar rations limited candy, so Americans ate three times more popcorn.
Modern popcorn production involves advanced technology and specific growing regions. In 1981, General Mills received the first patent for a microwave popcorn bag. This invention helped increase consumption in homes.
