It sits on the southeast coast. The Bay of Bengal is to the east. The city is part of a place called Puducherry. This area shares culture and language with the state of Tamil Nadu.

The city has a very long history. Long ago, it was a place for Roman trade. Later, many different groups ruled the land. The French ruled for 138 years. Because of this, the city has a French feel. People even call it the "French Riviera of the East."

A canal once split the city into two parts. One part was the French Quarter. The other part was the Indian Quarter.

The weather is warm and tropical. Most of the rain falls between October and December.

The land is mostly at sea level. A long seawall made of granite rocks protects the city. This wall is 8.5 meters high. It helps stop the sea from washing the land away. Many people live here and speak Tamil. They grow crops like rice, coconuts, and cotton.
