They are empowered by governments to enforce the laws that those governments create. In many countries, the term "police officer" is a generic label. It does not necessarily specify a specific rank. In some places, the word "officer" is a rank reserved only for the military. The word "police" itself comes from the Greek word "politeia." This word originally meant government or civil administration.

Police officers have several core responsibilities to maintain public order. Their primary duties involve the prevention, detection, and reporting of crime. They are also charged with the apprehension of suspects. Beyond crime fighting, they provide protection and assistance to the general public. Many officers are sworn to an oath. This oath gives them the legal power to arrest and detain people for limited times. Some officers undergo specialized training for specific tasks. These include counter-terrorism, surveillance, and child protection. Others investigate major crimes like fraud, murder, or drug trafficking.

Officers operate in different ways depending on their specific roles. Many wear uniforms so the public can identify them easily. However, some officers work in plain clothes. This allows them to pass themselves off as regular members of the public. Some officers work in specialized units, such as motorcycle officers. These individuals often use motorcycles, called "motors," to enforce traffic laws. Other specialists include police dog handlers, mounted police, or water police. In certain areas, park rangers also serve as law enforcement in wilderness regions. Military police perform similar duties but specifically for the military.

In many legal systems, police officers have certain legal exemptions. These exemptions allow them to perform their duties effectively. For example, an officer may use force to arrest a person. Under normal circumstances, this might be considered assault. However, the law allows it if the force is necessary for the arrest. Officers may also violate traffic laws while performing their duties. In some countries, officers are even required to intervene in crimes while off-duty. Most officers retain their lawful powers even when they are not working.

To become a police officer, candidates must usually meet specific qualifications. Most countries require the completion of formal education. Some police forces even offer "fast-track" schemes for university graduates. These graduates might serve as constables for two or three years before being promoted. Promotion is not automatic and usually requires passing examinations or interviews. Higher ranks, such as sergeants or inspectors, bring more responsibility and paperwork.

In the United Kingdom, they use a specific command structure for major incidents. This is known as the Gold, Silver, and Bronze system. A Bronze Commander coordinates efforts on the ground. A Silver Commander manages an Incident Control Room. A Gold Commander maintains overall command from a main Control Room. This system helps improve communication during large-scale disorder or emergencies.

Pay for police officers varies greatly depending on the location and rank. In the United States, the average patrol officer salary was $64,610 in 2021. In London, the average basic salary in 2020 was £36,773 per year.

In the Netherlands, street officers earn between €27,584 and €54,177 gross per year. Some officers in Connecticut, USA, have earned between $178,000 and $312,000 with overtime. In 2023, a Senior Deputy in San Francisco earned double that amount. These numbers show how much compensation depends on local economy and role.

Being a police officer can be a difficult and stressful career. Officers face risks of death in the line of duty and high occupational stress. To help, some regions have created mental health support programs. In 2019, New Jersey created a program to help officers with emotional resiliency.

Accountability is also a major part of the job. Agencies use tools like body-worn cameras to reduce misconduct and complaints. This helps ensure that officers protect the rights of the citizens they serve.
