Police misconduct

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Police misconduct happens when officers break the law or act wrongly. This can occur while they are doing their official jobs. Some types of misconduct involve being unfair to people based on race. Other types include lying in court or taking bribes to change laws. Officers might also use physical force when it is not needed. Some people even use their police ID to get free things. This behavior can hurt the trust between police and the public.

Misconduct can happen in many different ways. An officer might use intimidation to scare a person. They might also make a false arrest or hold someone unfairly. Some officers engage in what is called noble cause corruption. This is when an officer thinks a good result justifies bad actions. In the United States, many officers face investigations for these actions. At least 85,000 officers have been investigated for misconduct. Nearly 2,500 of them faced 10 or more different charges.

Sometimes, officers do not report their coworkers for breaking rules. People in the United States call this the "blue code of silence." A survey from 2005 found evidence that this code exists. A 2019 study in the journal Nature showed a pattern too. It found that misconduct by one officer can lead to more misconduct. Other officers might start acting wrongly if they see their peers do it. This makes it very hard to keep everyone following the rules.

Many people now use smart devices to film police activities. This helps hold officers accountable for what they do. High-quality video often ends up on sites like YouTube. However, some officers may try to stop people from filming. They might use violence or take away the person's camera. In Illinois, recording police was once a serious crime. A court ruled in 2012 that this law was likely wrong. Now, people can film officers in public places without fear.

To help stop misconduct, many departments use body cameras. These small cameras record what the officer sees and hears. Some studies say these cameras can reduce citizen complaints. One study of 516 organizations found they may prevent violence. However, not all departments want to use this new technology. Some worry about the cost or the privacy of people. Misconduct also costs cities a lot of money in settlements. Between 2004 and 2014, Chicago spent $521 million on these costs.
