This soil forms through a way called podzolization. This happens in cool and wet places. First, rain soaks into the ground. The water picks up tiny bits of organic matter. It also picks up iron and aluminum. These are metals found in the soil.
Next, the water carries these bits down deep. This leaves the top layer, called the E horizon, looking bleached and pale. The metals land in a deeper layer called the B horizon. This layer turns red, brown, or black. Sometimes, the metals pack together so tightly they make a hard layer.
Podzols are often poor for farming. They are very sandy. This means they do not hold much water or food for plants. Farmers can use them for grazing animals. Some types can grow crops if they add lime and fertilizer.

Organic matter comes from plant litter, the humus layer, and root exudates. This matter mixes with aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) ions. They form soluble organo-mineral complexes called chelates. In the second step, these chelates are translocated. Percolating water carries the complexes from the upper horizons to the deeper subsoil. This movement changes the physical and chemical makeup of the soil layers.
As the chelates move downward, they leave a specific trail. The upper layer, known as the E horizon or eluvial horizon, becomes bleached. It loses its iron and aluminum oxides, resulting in an ash-grey color. 
Sometimes, the B horizon becomes very dense. The relocated iron, aluminum, and organic matter can cement mineral particles together. This creates a compacted layer known as a hardpan or Ortstein. This layer can result in shallow rooting zones for plants. The soil profile is organized into specific layers. These are the A horizon (topsoil), the E horizon (eluviated soil), the B horizon (subsoil), and the C horizon (parent material). In some cases, the E horizon is missing. This happens if biological activity masks it or if disturbances obliterate it. Such soils are often called brown Podzolic soils.
The history of the term Podzol is tied to Russian agricultural observations. The name is derived from Russian words meaning "under-ashed soil." This refers to the experience of Russian peasants. When they plowed virgin soil, they found an apparent under-layer of ash. This ash-like layer was actually the E horizon. Vasily Dokuchaev first gave the term Podzol in mid-1875.
Podzols present significant challenges for agriculture. Many are sandy, which leads to low moisture and low nutrients. They can be excessively drained or have poor drainage due to subsoil cementation. The low pH makes them very acidic. This acidity can lead to phosphate deficiencies and aluminum toxicity.
