The landscape is shaped by complex geological processes. The park sits in a karst area, which is a type of landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks. The lakes are created by the formation of tufa or travertine barriers. Tufa is a type of limestone sediment. These barriers act as natural dams that hold back water to create basins. The name Plitvice was first mentioned in a written document in 1777 by Dominik Vukasović. The name refers to the natural phenomena that created these shallow basins, or "plitvak" in Croatian.
Water is the primary force driving this geological change. As rivers flow through the limestone underground, they dissolve a mineral called calcite. This process makes the water highly mineralized. The water becomes super-saturated with calcium and magnesium-hydrogencarbonate. The amount of dissolved calcium hydrogencarbonate depends on the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide in the water. Colder water can hold a higher quantity of this dissolved mineral. As the water moves and loses carbon dioxide, the minerals begin to precipitate, or settle out of the water.
Vegetation plays a critical role in the creation of these tufa barriers. Mosses, algae, and other water plants provide a surface for the minerals to settle on. When water is aerated or sprayed by waterfalls, it helps the sedimentation process. 
The geology of the park is divided into two distinct zones. The Upper Lakes in the south consist mainly of dolomite rock. Dolomite is slightly harder than limestone but has lower water permeability. The Lower Lakes in the north consist mostly of limestone. Limestone is more compact and massive, but it has higher water permeability. 
These natural processes can even change the shape of the lakes over time. Because the tufa barriers grow, they can eventually merge different bodies of water. For example, 400 years ago, there were two separate lakes where Kozjak lake is today. A faster-growing barrier eventually joined them into one large lake. 
The climate of the park influences its biology and appearance. The average annual temperature is 7.9 degrees Celsius. In the winter, snow falls from November until March. The lakes often freeze during December and January.
