Plitvice Lakes National Park is a huge and beautiful place in central Croatia.

It sits in a mountainous area known as a karst region. The park is located near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is part of the Dinaric Alps mountain range. Three mountains surround the park area. These are Mala Kapela, Lička Plješivica, and Medveđak.

A main road runs through the park from north to south. This road connects the Croatian inland to the Adriatic coast. Most of the park is in Lika-Senj County. About 9% of the area is in Karlovac County.

The park is famous for its sixteen beautiful lakes.

These lakes are arranged in steps called cascades. You can see colors like azure, green, grey, or blue. The colors change all the time. They change based on the sunlight and the minerals in the water. The lakes are made of many different parts. Two lakes, Prošćansko jezero and Kozjak, are the largest. They cover about 80% of the total water area. These two lakes are also the deepest in the park.

Water flows through limestone and dissolves a mineral called calcite. This makes the water very full of minerals. When the water moves, the minerals settle and form rock called tufa or travertine. This process has been happening for thousands of years. The tufa forms barriers that hold back the water to make lakes. These barriers are actually growing taller every year. Sometimes, a new barrier grows so fast that it joins two lakes into one. For example, Kozjak lake was once two separate lakes 400 years ago.

Plants and mosses play a big part in making these rocks.

Mosses and algae live in the water and on the rocks. When the water splashes over waterfalls, it helps the minerals settle. The minerals cover the soft, green moss. Over time, the moss becomes petrified and turns into hard stone. This creates new surfaces for more moss to grow on. This cycle helps build the amazing landscape we see today.

The water also flows from the White River and the Black River. These rivers join together to start the main water current.

In the winter, it can be very cold. Snow falls from November until March. The lakes often freeze during December and January. The average temperature in January is 2.2 °C. In the summer, the weather is warmer. In July and August, the temperature rises to about 17.4 °C. The park is a great home for many different animals. The forested mountain slopes act as safe places for them to live.

The park area is divided between two counties. About 90.7 percent of the land is in Lika-Senj County. The remaining 9.3 percent is in Karlovac County. A major north-south road passes through the park. This road connects the Croatian inland to the Adriatic coastal region.

These lakes are arranged in a series of cascades. The water displays a wide range of colors, including azure, green, grey, and blue. These colors change constantly. The shifts depend on the angle of sunlight and the amount of minerals or organisms in the water. The two largest lakes are Prošćansko jezero and Kozjak. Together, they cover about 80 percent of the total water body area.

These two lakes are also the deepest. No other lakes in the park exceed their depth.

The landscape is shaped by complex geological processes. The park sits in a karst area, which is a type of landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks. The lakes are created by the formation of tufa or travertine barriers. Tufa is a type of limestone sediment. These barriers act as natural dams that hold back water to create basins. The name Plitvice was first mentioned in a written document in 1777 by Dominik Vukasović. The name refers to the natural phenomena that created these shallow basins, or "plitvak" in Croatian.

Water is the primary force driving this geological change. As rivers flow through the limestone underground, they dissolve a mineral called calcite. This process makes the water highly mineralized. The water becomes super-saturated with calcium and magnesium-hydrogencarbonate. The amount of dissolved calcium hydrogencarbonate depends on the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide in the water. Colder water can hold a higher quantity of this dissolved mineral. As the water moves and loses carbon dioxide, the minerals begin to precipitate, or settle out of the water.

Vegetation plays a critical role in the creation of these tufa barriers. Mosses, algae, and other water plants provide a surface for the minerals to settle on. When water is aerated or sprayed by waterfalls, it helps the sedimentation process.

Mosses provide a substrate, which is a surface for growth. As minerals settle, they encrust the young, soft moss shoots. Over time, the moss becomes petrified, meaning it turns into stone. This creates a hard shell that allows new moss to grow on top. This cycle allows the barriers to grow in height by up to 13 millimeters every year.

The geology of the park is divided into two distinct zones. The Upper Lakes in the south consist mainly of dolomite rock. Dolomite is slightly harder than limestone but has lower water permeability. The Lower Lakes in the north consist mostly of limestone. Limestone is more compact and massive, but it has higher water permeability.

This difference in rock type affects how water moves through the terrain. The overall elevation drop from the first lake to the last is 912 meters. The highest point is Seliški vrh at 1,279 meters. The lowest point is at the bridge across the Korana river at 367 meters.

These natural processes can even change the shape of the lakes over time. Because the tufa barriers grow, they can eventually merge different bodies of water. For example, 400 years ago, there were two separate lakes where Kozjak lake is today. A faster-growing barrier eventually joined them into one large lake.

This demonstrates how the landscape is constantly evolving. The continuous growth of tufa often surpasses the rate of erosion that would otherwise destroy the barriers.

The climate of the park influences its biology and appearance. The average annual temperature is 7.9 degrees Celsius. In the winter, snow falls from November until March. The lakes often freeze during December and January.

In the summer, temperatures rise to an average of 17.4 degrees Celsius in July and August. The forested mountain slopes serve as reservoirs and provide a refuge for many animal species. This combination of water, terrain, and climate creates a highly biodiverse region.
