Many ways can make a plateau. Hot, melted rock called magma can rise from deep inside the Earth. This makes the ground swell upward. Lava can also flow out of cracks. This builds up layers of rock. This is how the Pajarito Plateau was made.

Moving parts of the Earth can also push land up. This is called plate tectonics. Water and ice can also shape the land. Glaciers and rivers can wear mountains down into plateaus.

Some plateaus are between mountains. These are called intermontane plateaus. The Tibetan Plateau is a famous one. It is very high and wide. People call it the "Roof of the World."

Other plateaus are near the sea. Some are far from mountains. The Antarctic Plateau is very large and icy. It covers much of East Antarctica.

Scientists group plateaus by the land around them. Intermontane plateaus are tucked between mountain ranges. The Tibetan Plateau sits between the Himalayas and the Kunlun Mountains. Piedmont plateaus have mountains on one side and a plain or sea on the other. The Piedmont Plateau in the Eastern United States is one example. Continental plateaus are surrounded by plains or oceans. The Antarctic Plateau is a huge, icy example.

There are many famous plateaus across the globe. The Tibetan Plateau is the highest and largest in the world. It is often called the "Roof of the World." In Africa, the Ethiopian Highlands are very high. Some parts reach 4,556 metres above sea level. In North America, the Colorado Plateau is split by the Grand Canyon. The Colorado River carved that canyon over 10 million years.

Plateaus connect to many things we see every day. Some plateaus are homes to many people. The Mexican Plateau holds more than 70 million people. Other plateaus are very cold and empty. The Antarctic Plateau is home to the South Pole. Even the weather can change because of them. The Tibetan Plateau is high enough to help drive the monsoons in India.

This occurs when lava spreads outward from cracks or weak areas in the crust. This process builds up thick layers of rock over time.

Plate tectonics can also form large plateaus. The movement of tectonic plates causes the land to uplift. These plateaus are usually quite large and have a fairly uniform altitude. Erosion is a third way that plateaus form. Glaciers can erode mountain ranges, leaving flat land between them. Water also plays a major role by wearing down mountains into plateaus. Some areas become dissected plateaus. These are highly eroded landforms cut by rivers into deep, narrow valleys. An example of this is the Scottish Highlands.

Scientists classify plateaus based on the environment that surrounds them. Intermontane plateaus are enclosed by fold mountains. These are often the highest and most extensive plateaus on Earth. Examples include the Tibetan Plateau and the Altiplano. Piedmont plateaus are bordered by mountains on one side. On the other side, they meet a plain or a sea. The Piedmont Plateau in the Eastern United States is a clear example. Continental plateaus are bordered by plains or oceans on all sides. The Antarctic Plateau is a massive continental example.

History and ongoing movements show how plateaus change. The Tibetan Plateau is the largest and highest in the world. It is still being formed today. This happens because the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates are colliding. This massive plateau is so high that it can change weather patterns. It can reverse Hadley cell convection cycles. It also helps drive the monsoons of India toward the south.

Different continents host unique and massive plateaus. In Africa, the Ethiopian Highlands reach heights of 4,556 metres. This area is sometimes called the Roof of Africa. In Antarctica, the icy Antarctic Plateau covers most of East Antarctica. This plateau is home to the geographic South Pole. Interestingly, parts of the ice are below sea level. As the ice melts, the land may rise through a process called isostasy. In North America, the Colorado Plateau was shaped by a unique balance. The land rose by about one centimeter per year for millions of years. At the same time, the Colorado River eroded the crust at a nearly equal rate. This created the Grand Canyon.

Plateaus also support vast human populations and diverse ecosystems. The Mexican Plateau is home to more than 70 million people. The Altiplano in South America hosts major cities like La Paz. This plateau sits between the Andes mountains. The northeastern part of the Altiplano is humid, while the southwest has salt flats. In Oceania, the North Island Volcanic Plateau in New Zealand features crater lakes like Lake Taupō. These landforms connect many different systems, from local habitats to global climate patterns.
