Some are made of rock and metal. These are like our Earth. Other planets are very large. They are made of gas or ice. They do not have a hard ground. Some planets are much bigger than Earth. Jupiter is the biggest one of all. Our space is full of wonder.

In our Solar System, there are eight planets.

Some planets are called terrestrial planets. These are made of rock and metal. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are in this group. Earth is the largest of these four.

Other planets are much larger. These are called giant planets. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants. They are mostly made of hydrogen and helium. Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. They are made of things like water and methane.

Planets form from a disk of dust and gas. This happens through accretion. Accretion is a way where small bits of dust stick together. They grow larger and larger over time. Eventually, they become big enough to be planets.

We have also found many exoplanets. An exoplanet is a planet outside our Solar System. Some of these orbit in a habitable zone. This is a place where liquid water might exist. Earth is the only planet known to have life.

Planets form through a way of working called accretion. It all begins with a huge cloud of gas and dust. This cloud collapses to create a young star at the center. Around this star, a spinning disk of material forms. Small dust particles in this disk slowly stick together. They grow into larger chunks called planetesimals. These chunks use gravity to pull in even more material. Eventually, they become large enough to be called protoplanets.

People have wondered about planets for a very long time. The word planet comes from a Greek word. In ancient times, people saw five moving lights in the sky. They named these Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Many cultures even linked these lights to their gods. For a long time, people thought Earth was the center of everything. This changed during the 16th and 17th centuries. Scientists realized Earth is actually a planet orbiting the Sun.

Our Solar System has many different kinds of worlds. The four terrestrial planets are made of rock and metal. Earth is the largest of these rocky worlds. The giant planets are much more massive. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants made of hydrogen and helium. Saturn is one third as massive as Jupiter. Uranus and Neptune are ice giants made of water and methane.

We have even found planets far beyond our own home. These are called exoplanets. They orbit stars other than our Sun. Scientists have found over 5,900 of these distant worlds. This is a place where liquid water might exist on the surface.

A planet is a large, rounded astronomical body that orbits a star, a stellar remnant, or a brown dwarf. To be classified as a planet, the object must not be a star itself. In our Solar System, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) recognizes eight planets. These are divided into the terrestrial planets and the giant planets.

Understanding planets helps us learn how solar systems form and where life might exist. It also helps us understand the difference between rocky worlds and massive gas giants.

Planets form through a process called accretion. This begins when an interstellar cloud of gas and dust collapses into a nebula. At the center, a young protostar forms. Surrounding this star is a rotating protoplanetary disk. Inside this disk, dust particles undergo sticky collisions to accumulate mass. These particles grow into local concentrations of mass called planetesimals.

As planetesimals grow, their gravitational attraction pulls in even more material. This accelerates the accretion process until they become dense protoplanets. Once a protoplanet reaches a mass larger than Mars, it begins to capture an extended atmosphere. This atmosphere increases the rate at which it pulls in more planetesimals through atmospheric drag.

There are several distinct types of planets in our Solar System. The terrestrial planets include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These bodies are primarily composed of rock and metal. Earth is the largest of these terrestrial worlds. The giant planets are much more massive and fall into two groups. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants, made mostly of hydrogen and helium.

Uranus and Neptune are known as ice giants. These are composed of low-boiling-point materials like water, methane, and ammonia. They also possess thick atmospheres of hydrogen and helium.

Our understanding of planets has changed significantly throughout history. The word "planet" comes from a Greek term. In antiquity, people used it to describe the Sun, the Moon, and five moving lights: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Many cultures associated these celestial bodies with their gods. For a long time, people believed in geocentrism, the idea that Earth was the center of the universe. This changed during the 16th and 17th centuries with the rise of heliocentrism. The invention of the telescope later revealed many more objects, such as the moons of other planets and the ice giants.

In 2006, the IAU established a specific definition for planets. This decision was spurred by the discovery of large objects in the Kuiper belt, such as Eris. Under this definition, Ceres, Pluto, and Eris are classified as dwarf planets. Dwarf planets are gravitationally rounded but have not cleared their orbits of other bodies.

While the IAU uses a strict definition, many planetary scientists still use the term "planet" more broadly. They may include dwarf planets or large, rounded moons in their studies.

Specific measurements show the incredible variety of sizes in our system. Jupiter is the largest planet, with a mass of 318 Earth masses. In contrast, Mercury is the smallest at only 0.055 Earth masses. Saturn is a massive gas giant, but it is only one third as massive as Jupiter, at 95 Earth masses. The ice giants are much smaller, with Uranus and Neptune having masses of 14 and 17 Earth masses respectively.

These numbers highlight the massive scale differences between the different types of planets.

Beyond our Solar System, astronomers have discovered over 5,900 exoplanets. These are planets that orbit stars other than our Sun. Some exoplanets have very unusual features. For example, "hot Jupiters" are giant planets that orbit very close to their parent stars. Others, like HD 20782 b, have extremely eccentric orbits.

Scientists also look for planets in the "habitable zone." This is the region around a star where liquid water could potentially exist on a surface. While many exoplanets exist in these zones, Earth remains the only planet known to support life.
