Plain text is a special way to store data on a computer. It uses only characters that people can read, like letters and numbers.

This means it does not include images or colors. It also leaves out styles like bold or large fonts. Those styles belong to something called rich text. Plain text is very useful because it is simple. It can include spaces or tabs to help arrange things. It can also use line breaks to start new lines.

This simplicity helps files work on many different kinds of computers.

How does plain text work? It works by using a sequence of character codes.

Each letter or symbol is given a specific number. When a computer reads the file, it looks at these numbers to show the right characters. Some codes are even used for things you cannot see. These are called control characters, like the tab or a newline. They tell the computer how to move the text around. This is different from a binary file. A binary file has parts that a computer cannot read as simple text.

Computers have changed a lot in how they handle text. Before the early 1960s, computers were mostly for math. Memory was very expensive back then. Many computers only used 6 bits for each character. This only allowed for 64 different characters.

Because of this, they could not show both big and small letters. People had to use tricks, like an asterisk, to show big letters. Later, a man named Fred Brooks from IBM argued for using 8-bit bytes. He believed people would want to process more text in the future. He was right, and this helped text become more common.

There are many important names and numbers in the history of text. Most computers used a system called ASCII. This system uses values from 0 to 31 for control characters. It uses values from 32 to 127 for letters and punctuation.

ASCII was helpful, but it could not show many languages. It lacked symbols for Spanish, French, or Greek. To fix this, groups like ISO created new ways to show more characters. Now, we mostly use Unicode. Unicode is a huge system. It allows for 1,114,112 different code values.

It covers almost all modern writing systems and even math symbols.

You can see plain text in many parts of your digital life. Programmers use it every day to write source code. This is the set of instructions that tells a program what to do.

It is also used for email and configuration files. Configuration files are used to save settings for a program. Even web browsers use it to show information. Some browsers only show plain text. Using plain text is one of the best ways to save knowledge. It stays safe and easy to read for a very long time.
