They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Steelers are a highly successful franchise with a deep history. They are the seventh-oldest franchise in the NFL. They are also the oldest franchise in the AFC. While they struggled in the years before the league merger, they became a powerhouse in the modern era. Today, they are known for their many championships and their massive fanbase called Steeler Nation.

The team's history began on July 8, 1933.

Art Rooney founded the team and named them the Pittsburgh Pirates. He took this name from the local baseball team. To avoid confusion, local media often called them the "Rooneymen." This nickname lasted for many decades. The team changed its name to the Steelers before the 1940 season. A unique aspect of the team is its ownership. The Rooney family has owned the organization since its founding. Art Rooney was the founder. His son, Dan Rooney, led the team from 1988 until 2017. Now, Art Rooney II helps manage the franchise.

During World War II, the team faced significant challenges. Player shortages forced the Steelers to merge with other teams. In 1943, they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles. This combined team was known as the "Steagles." They finished the season with a 5–4–1 record. In 1944, they merged with the Chicago Cardinals. This team was called "Card-Pitt," or sometimes mockingly, the "Carpets." They finished with a 0–10 record. This remains the only winless season in the franchise's history. Before the 1970 merger, the team's only playoff appearance was a loss at Forbes Field.

The modern era of Steelers greatness began with coach Chuck Noll.

Noll joined the team in 1969. He was famous for his talent in the NFL draft. In 1974, he achieved an incredible feat. He selected four future Hall of Famers in a single draft. These players were Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, John Stallworth, and Mike Webster. This 1974 draft is considered the best in franchise history. These players helped build an NFL dynasty. The Steelers became the only team to win four Super Bowls in six years. They also had a 49-game winning streak against teams with losing records.

Following the Noll era, Bill Cowher took over as head coach in 1992.

Cowher led the team to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons. He was known for a strong defense called "Blitzburgh." In 2006, Cowher led the Steelers to their fifth Super Bowl title. They defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. This made the Steelers the first sixth-seeded playoff team to win a Super Bowl. Cowher finished his career with 149 regular-season wins. He led the team to ten playoff appearances in fifteen seasons.

In 2007, Mike Tomlin became the head coach.

Tomlin is the first African-American head coach in the team's 75-year history. He quickly found success by leading the team to the Super Bowl in his second season. In 2009, he led the Steelers to a 27–23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. At age 36, Tomlin became the youngest head coach to ever win a Super Bowl. He also became the second African-American coach to win a championship. During the 2013–2017 seasons, the team was known for the "Killer B's." This group included Antonio Brown, Ben Roethlisberger, and Le'Veon Bell.

The Steelers' success is measured by many impressive numbers.

They are tied with the New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl titles with six. They have appeared in eight Super Bowls total. This ties them with the Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, and San Francisco 49ers. The team has also played in 16 conference championship games. They have won eight AFC championships, tying them with the Denver Broncos. They have hosted 11 conference championship games. These statistics show why the Steelers are one of the most significant teams in professional sports.

The team plays its home games at Acrisure Stadium.

The stadium is located on the North Shore in Pittsburgh. It was originally built in 2001 as Heinz Field. This stadium replaced Three Rivers Stadium, which hosted the team for 31 seasons. Before that, the Steelers played at Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field. The stadium is a central part of the team's identity in the city. It serves as a gathering place for the Steeler Nation to celebrate their history and their many victories.
