They have thin bodies and long legs. Most pipits are brown or white. This dull color helps them hide. It is called camouflage.

This helps them blend into soil and stones.

These birds live in many places. They live in most parts of the world. They stay away from dry deserts and thick rainforests. Many pipits live in open grasslands. Some live on rocky cliffs by the sea.

Pipits spend much time on the ground. They eat small bugs like ants and beetles. Some species even eat tiny fish. They can also eat seeds and berries.

Some pipits move to new homes each year. This is called migration. They fly to find better food or weather. Other pipits stay in one place all year.

Many pipits wag their tails. The American pipit wags its tail up and down. It also wags it side to side.
