life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pine squirrels are small tree squirrels. They have bushy tails. These animals belong to the genus Tamiasciurus. This name comes from Greek words. It means steward or dispenser squirrel. There are three species in this group. One is the Douglas squirrel. Another is the southwestern red squirrel. The third is the American red squirrel. All three species live in North America.

You can find them in Canada. They live in the United States too. Some live in Alaska. Others live in Mexico.

These squirrels eat many different things. They eat seeds from trees. They also eat plants and fungi. They eat arthropods. These are small creatures like bugs. Do not confuse them with Eurasian red squirrels. Those live in other parts of the world. Pine squirrels stay in the north and west. They help keep the forest busy.

Their tails help them move in trees.
