He loved to study physics. Physics is the study of how the world works.

In 1896, Zeeman made a big discovery. He looked at how light acts near a magnet. He saw that a magnetic field can split light. This split light is called the Zeeman effect.

This discovery helped people learn about the atom. It showed that tiny particles in light are very small. These particles have a negative charge. This was found even before the electron was named.

Because of this work, Zeeman won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1902. He shared the prize with Hendrik Lorentz. Lorentz helped explain why the light split.

Zeeman also worked as a teacher. He was a professor at the University of Amsterdam. He even led the Physics Institute there. He studied many things like light and gravity. A lab in Amsterdam was named after him in 1940. Zeeman lived to be 78 years old. He died in 1943.
