During the Renaissance, he earned the title "prince of poets." He acted as the central leader of La Pléiade. This was a prestigious group of seven French Renaissance poets. They aimed to elevate the French language through careful scholarship. They wanted to apply classical principles to their own native tongue. Ronsard's work remains a cornerstone of French literary history.

His path to poetic leadership involved intense study and travel. Born at the Manoir de la Possonnière, he was the youngest son of Louis de Ronsard.

His father served as maître d'hôtel du roi to King Francis I. Pierre received an early education at home before moving to Paris. At age nine, he attended the College of Navarre. He later served as a page in the Scottish court. This experience inspired him to create French translations of classical authors.

A significant medical event changed the course of his life. While on a diplomatic mission to Alsace in 1540, he suffered an attack of deafness. This hearing impairment prevented him from pursuing a career in diplomacy. Consequently, he dedicated himself to deep academic study. He spent seven years at the Collège Coqueret.

There, he studied under Jean Daurat. He studied alongside future colleagues like Antoine de Baïf and Joachim du Bellay.

La Pléiade functioned as a literary movement with specific goals. The group sought to use the French vernacular more effectively. They followed the principles of criticism found in ancient Greek and Roman texts. The group included seven core writers. These were Ronsard, Du Bellay, Baïf, Belleau, Pontus de Tyard, Jodelle, and Daurat. Joachim du Bellay actually published the first manifesto for this movement in 1549. This work was titled Défense et illustration de la langue française.

Ronsard's published works arrived in several important stages. He published his first books of Odes in 1550. In 1552, he released Les Amours de Cassandre.

This collection was dedicated to Cassandre Salviati. His later works included the Hymnes and the epic poem La Franciade. La Franciade, published in 1572, used a decasyllabic metre. This specific rhythm was meant for epic poetry but was often criticized. His career was marked by both massive popularity and intense literary quarrels.

His social standing was high, but it brought significant conflict. He enjoyed the patronage of several French kings. King Charles IX even gave him rooms in the royal palace.

However, this closeness to the throne angered the Huguenots. This religious group wrote many attacks against him. They even attempted to have him assassinated. Despite these threats, Ronsard remained prosperous. He received gifts from foreign leaders, including Queen Elizabeth I of England.

In his final years, Ronsard faced declining health and personal loss. He moved between his various homes in Vendôme and Paris. He spent his last days at his priory of Saint-Cosme. He died on December 27, 1585, after a period of great pain. He was buried in the church at Saint-Cosme. His literary legacy has endured through centuries of changing styles. Even today, his name is honored in the natural world.
