It is the highest peak in the country. It is also the highest volcano in North America. This mountain sits on the border of Veracruz and Puebla. It is part of a volcanic chain called the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The mountain is very prominent in the landscape. It is the second most prominent volcanic peak in the world. Only Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa is more prominent. This means it rises very high above the land around it.

The volcano was built in three different stages. These stages involved layers of lava and ash. The most recent stage began about 16,000 years ago.
